I have been asked to introduce myself as the Advanced Clinical Practitioner-Paramedic working at Union Brae & Norham Practice as some may not have met me and others may have met me in a different role for the North East Ambulance Service.
My career has taken a slightly different path into primary care. I started out as a community paramedic during the early trial of the role, which gave me the opportunity to be part of something new and help shape how paramedics could work within GP practices.
I spent three years at Union Brae and Well Close surgeries undertaking home visits, building experience and confidence in managing a wide range of patients, often being the first point of contact for those with urgent or complex needs.
I then stepped away for a period to work as a Clinical Team Leader within the ambulance service. That role challenged me in different ways, particularly around leadership, decision-making, and supporting others in high-pressure situations, and it’s something that has really influenced how I work today.
Returning to Union Brae as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner felt like a natural next step. In my current role, I assess, diagnose and manage patients independently, drawing on my background in both pre-hospital and primary care. I enjoy the variety the role brings and the opportunity to build relationships with patients while helping them navigate their care.
Being an ACP means working across clinical care, leadership, education, and ongoing learning. For me, it’s about continually developing, supporting the wider team, and making sure patients receive safe, effective, and compassionate care.
I am excited about my future within such a supportive and forward-thinking team, one that continuously strives to improve systems for patients while actively supporting staff through continuous professional development and training.
