Step 1: Reduce pressure from above

• Sort constipation early — gentle bowels, no straining, no pushing
• Use calmer breathing patterns to avoid extra downward pressure
• Check your lifting technique so you’re not repeatedly bearing down
• Address ongoing triggers like coughing or recurrent sickness
• Let your tummy relax and respond naturally — not rigid all day, not constantly “holding in”
• Tweak posture and day-to-day positions — long periods of slouching often make heaviness feel worse
• If babywearing, make sure you’re taught a method that suits your body

Step 2: Build support from below

• Strengthen and coordinate your pelvic floor
• Build hip and leg strength so the load is shared, not just carried by the pelvis
• A pessary can be an excellent support option — it’s a tool, not a setback
• Choose support garments that fit YOUR body and your symptoms
• Consider hormonal support if appropriate (breastfeeding, perimenopause, menopause) — oestrogen supports tissue health
• Explore medical options when needed (e.g., perineal procedures, PRP)

This isn’t about “fixing” you — it’s about easing unnecessary strain and improving your support system where it matters most.

Some common reasons milk supply feels low

• Shallow latch or positioning
• Tongue tie or oral tension
• Birth interventions (inductions, caesarean, epidural)
• Separation from baby in the early hours
• Hormonal factors
• Not enough early stimulation (milk is a “supply and demand” system)

What helps in the early weeks

• Deep, comfortable latch
• Frequent feeding (8–12+ times in 24 hours)
• Breast compressions
• Skin-to-skin
• Pumping if baby is struggling to latch effectively
• Support from an IBCLC
