The Bowen Technique and Palliative Care

In March 2022 the BMJ published a study into the effectiveness of the Bowen Technique for symptom management in cancer and palliative care patients. Patients were referred to the complementary therapies service for symptom management - particularly stress and anxiety - but also for other symptoms such as nausea; insomnia; joint aches and neuropathy.

It was concluded that neuropathy and pain concerns were greatly improved, and symptoms of anxiety and stress were also beneficially affected.

This study further illustrates that the Bowen Technique is a therapy which can often enhance an individuals quality of life, even in the most difficult of circumstances.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME)

Individuals who suffer from chronic fatigue experience profound mental and physical exhaustion. Such individuals often have stressed immune systems and an overloaded central nervous system. Their symptoms can worsen with increased activity (post exertional malaise).

Bowen moves send neurological impulses to the brain, with the aim of achieving both muscle relaxation and pain reduction. Several Bowen moves are located along acupuncture meridians which are known to stimulate and balance the bodies energy. Such moves often have the effect of enhancing sleep patterns, allowing the body more time for rest and repair.

Bowen's gentle approach is well tolerated by clients of extreme sensitivity, which makes it well suited for sufferers of chronic fatigue .

Infertility and The Bowen Technique

Bowen Therapy has an important role to play in the health of women before, during and after pregnancy.

"Trials in the UK, Australia and New Zealand using the Bowen Technique on infertile couples have met with remarkable success, and Bowen specialists worldwide report on the fast and effective results of this technique in treating infertility" (Report - Guardian - Aug 2001)

Bowen is a non-invasive technique that aims to assist the body in the balancing of fertility hormones, and the decreasing of stress levels.

Why not try the Bowen Technique before embarking on IVF or alongside other traditional fertility treatments.

Neck Pain and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Bowen therapy's upper back and neck procedure aims to reduce pain and swelling of the trapezius and rhomboid muscles. Neck and shoulder pain can result from poor posture, or spending a lengthy amount of time in front of a computer screen. It is often when keeping the head immobile for long periods of time that neck pain can occur.

The overuse of technology can also be linked to carpal tunnel syndrome, which can literally (in some cases) lead to a pain in the neck.

Carpal tunnel syndrome can happen because of compression to the median nerve, which passes through the neck, resulting in symptoms such as numbness and tingling with occasional shooting pains along the nerve path.

Bowen is a comfortable, gentle way of aiming to rebalance muscles, tendons, fascia and ligaments to bring pain relief. It differs from other therapies due to the gentle pain-free technique used and the speed at which practitioners often see results.

Migraines and Headaches

Migraines and persistent headaches affect a significant proportion of the population. Migraines may be due to genetic disposition; anatomical abnormalities; stress; sleep disturbance (which can alter serotonin levels); or hormonal fluctuations.

Migraine sufferers often seek relief through conventional pharmaceutical treatments, but these may come with unwanted side-effects.

Bowen is a gentle soft tissue technique that aims to harmonise the nervous system and improve cerebral circulation. It also aims to address the postural imbalances which can induce migraines and headaches.

In my experience, Bowen offers clients relief of pain intensity and a decrease in the frequency of migraine attacks.

Why not try a new approach to pain relief ?

Do you suffer from back pain?

Most people will experience back pain at some time in their lives. Often non-specific, short term pain can result from a minor injury or poor posture. In other cases, however, pain can be chronic and debilitating, resulting from a range of medical conditions.

The Bowen Technique aims to deal with the root causes of back pain and to trigger the body's own innate healing abilities. Therapists believe it does so by rebalancing muscles, fascia, ligaments and tendons, thereby bringing balance back to the nervous system.

Each Bowen treatment lasts approximately an hour, and the first session includes a free consultation. Please feel free to get in touch for more information.

Do you think you may be suffering with hormonal problems?

The following issues can be a result of a hormonal imbalance:

- Painful or irregular periods
- Debilitating menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, brain fog or disturbed sleep
- Headaches/Migraines
- Anxiety/depression

The Bowen technique is a gentle therapy that has been known to be very effective in dealing with such issues - with many clients reporting significant improvements despite originally seeking treatment for separate, unrelated ailments.

Last week for example, a client of mine who had sought treatment for her back pain,, was delighted to report that during the course of treatment, her debilitating hot flushes had entirely disappeared!

Bowen therapists believe that such improvements may occur due to a fundamental shift in the autonomic nervous system that happens after treatment - This shift can have a significant effect on hormonal rhythms.

Shoulder Pain ?

The Bowen Technique's frozen shoulder procedure has been the subject of several pilot studies. One such study evaluated the procedure in terms of client's pain, functional ability and well being.

The study concluded that the technique demonstrated an improvement for participants, even for those with a very long standing history of shoulder pain.

In my experience, clients have responded very positively in terms of both pain relief, and improved mobility, often after just one treatment. Why not give Bowen a try ?

Pain during and after Pregnancy

Several recent clients of mine have experienced quite severe pain both during and after pregnancy. Pelvic misalignment after childbirth is quite common, since both the pelvis and the coccyx are under extreme pressure at this time.

Expectant mothers often experience symptoms ranging from sacroiliac pain and sciatica, to breathlessness and heartburn. In rarer cases, the loosening of the skeleton by a pregnancy hormone called relaxin can lead to extreme leg, hip and back pain. It takes time for structures such as the pelvis to strengthen after childbirth, due to hormonal changes, and individuals are more susceptible to injury during this time.

The Bowen technique can be performed during pregnancy, right up to labour, with a client sitting or lying on her side.

Kate, a recent client, who had suffered severe hip and coccyx pain for 3 years after her pregnancy, is now pain free after a course of Bowen treatment. Kate's testimonial appears in the reviews section of my page - please take a look.

Sciatica

Sciatica is a type of neuritis, characterised by severe pain along the path of the sciatic nerve. Inflammation or injury to the sciatic nerve results in deep pain that may extend from the buttock, down the back and the side of the leg.

Other symptoms may include foot-drop, a loss of sensation over the lower leg and foot, and an inability to flex the foot.

There are many causes of sciatic nerve injury, including lumbar disc herniation (slipped disc), piriformis syndrome and pregnancy.

Bowen works to relax the nervous system, helping to release tension in the muscles and connective tissue, which may provide relief from sciatica. A treatment programme of 2-3 sessions is recommended.

Bowen is a complementary therapy, and If you are experiencing symptoms of sciatica, it's important to seek advice from a medical professional to try to determine the underlying cause.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

The symptoms of IBS include cramping, abdominal pain, constipation and/or diarrhoea. These are just some of a myriad of gastro-intestinal symptoms from which people can commonly suffer.

Several Bowen procedures are thought to have an effect upon the Vagus Nerve, which is responsible for the regulation of internal organ functions, such as digestion. As a result, the technique may improve the symptoms of poor digestion as well as improving the assimilation of vitamins and minerals, and the elimination of waste.

IBS can also be a stress related problem, which Bowen may relieve by calming the nervous system, thereby relaxing the body and relieving stress and tension.

Bowen is a complementary therapy, and If you are experiencing IBS symptoms, it's important to seek advice from a medical professional to try to determine the underlying cause.
