If your child is bright… but reading, writing, or homework feels much harder than it should, this is often why.

For many dyslexic learners, the challenge isn’t ability. It’s cognitive load.

Tasks like reading and writing are not single processes. They involve:
• decoding words
• holding information in working memory
• processing meaning
• maintaining pace

All at the same time.

When these demands stack up, the brain becomes overloaded. The result can be fatigue, slow progress, reduced comprehension, or avoidance.

This is often misunderstood as lack of effort. In reality, it reflects how much processing is required.

Reducing cognitive load is key.

When less mental energy is spent just getting through the task, more is available for understanding, thinking, and building confidence.

This is where the right technology can help.

Tools such as:
• text-to-speech (to support reading)
• speech-to-text (to support writing)
• audiobooks (to access content)
• reading adjustments and visual supports
• organisation tools and reminders
• AI tools for structuring and simplifying

…can make learning more manageable.

This isn’t about lowering expectations.
It’s about improving access.

When the load is reduced, we often see:
• better engagement
• more independence
• growing confidence

If you’d like to explore these tools in practice, join us at our:

Tech That Lifts the Load – Dyslexia Café (May 2nd)

We’ll be demonstrating tools, sharing what works, and answering questions in a practical, informal setting.

We’ve just shared a post from Dyslexia South East CiC about the Disney short Maddie and the Test - and it raises some important questions.

While the film aims to highlight the pressures of testing, it also leans into visual difficulties, which can risk reinforcing a common misconception about dyslexia. Dyslexia is not a visual issue, but a difference in language processing - something we’re careful to identify accurately in our assessment work.

It’s a good reminder of how important it is to get the understanding right, especially when it comes to supporting young people effectively.

If reading feels overwhelming, try these approaches:

- Use a ruler or finger to guide the eyes along the line
- Choose larger fonts and increased spacing
- Try audiobooks alongside the printed text

Combining listening and reading can help improve comprehension and confidence.

You’re not alone — we’ve got this covered. I’ve seen how the right support transforms learning and confidence for people with dyslexia. My latest post explains practical, evidence-based options: multisensory teaching, structured literacy programmes (Orton‑Gillingham, Barton, Wilson), assistive tech (text‑to‑speech, speech‑to‑text, audiobooks), and how assessments create personalised plans.

If you’re a parent, teen or adult in East Sussex or Kent wondering where to start, this guide walks you through finding the right assessment and specialist support, plus tips for helping learners at home and school. Together we can build skills, independence and self‑belief.

Dyslexia and exams

Exams mean working quickly to remember lots of information, under timed conditions and on lots of things all at once. For dyslexic learners, the challenge of exams can be even more daunting, says Holly Bolt.
