Halloween will soon be here and I don’t know about you but we love seeing the little (and big!) ones dressed up in their Halloween costumes!

It’s important to remember that, while they are super-cute and fun, costumes like the one in the picture are mass-produced as cheaply as possible and safety isn’t the top priority for these once-a-year costumes.

Here are some tips for keeping little ones safe this Halloween:

- Keep children in dressing up costumes well away from any naked flames. Use battery operated candles rather than real flames for pumpkins and other decorations.
- Try to buy from reputable brands rather than the cheapest one you can find online as these may not meet safety standards. Look for the CE, UKCA or UKNI mark.
- Encourage children to wear other layers under their Halloween costume.
- Teach children that if they worst should happen and they do find their costume catches on fire to STOP, DROP and ROLL which will help to distinguish the flames quickly.

And most importantly – stay safe and have fun!

Will you be taking your little on trick or treating this year? What will they be dressing up as? Let us know in the comments.

🫁 Bronchiolitis is a common chest infection that affects babies and children under 2. It’s usually mild and can be treated at home, but it can sometimes be serious and require hospitalisation.

It occurs when there is swelling in the smallest airways in the lungs, called bronchioles, obstructing them and making it more difficult to breathe.

Did you know…

Each year, roughly 80,000 people suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest – that’s around 200 people every day.

Over 80% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home so it’s most likely to be a loved one you would need to perform CPR on.

Just 1 in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

We can change this!!

ANYONE can do CPR and use a public access defibrillator. They are simple skills that can literally mean the difference between life and death.

In doing a first aid course, you are learning skills that could potentially save a life – how amazing is that!

In our first aid classes we’ll teach you how to perform CPR on babies, children and adults and we’ll also teach you how to use a defibrillator).

Together we can make the world a safer place.

The 11th October is National Burns Awareness Day and the message this year from the British Burn Association is ‘Hot water burns like fire’.

According to the British Burn Association 7,335 children were burned or scalded in 2022 alone in England and Wales.

This figure doesn’t include the thousands seen and discharged in A&E. These are the children who were so badly injured they had to be admitted to a Specialist Burns Unit.

Most accidents that cause burns and scalds to babies and children involve hot water, so in this week’s blog we’re going to look at all the risks within the home and we’ll give you a reminder of what first aid steps to take if your child ever does experience a burn.

Has your child ever shown behaviours that you find a bit puzzling or unusual like going upside down and looking through their legs, repeatedly throwing an object or continuously spinning the wheels on a toy car?

One concept that can provide insight into these types of play and many others is "schemas." Understanding what schemas are, how to recognise them through your child's behaviour, and when they typically manifest can help you navigate these phases and offer your child appropriate toys to effectively explore their current schema.

In this week's blog post, we are exploring the fascinating world of schemas!

Has your child ever shown behaviours that you find a bit puzzling like going upside down, repeatedly throwing or spinning wheels on a toy car?

Every time your child is riding on something with wheels they should have a helmet on their head.

A helmet could help protect your child from a serious head injury or even save their life if they fall or are hit by a car.

Statistics from the RoSPA found that in bicycle accidents where the casualty was wearing a helmet, fatal head injuries were reduced by 71%, serious injuries were reduced by 60% and overall head injuries were reduced by 48%.

Please make sure you protect your child by putting a helmet on them regardless of where they are riding or how short the distance.

When fitting your child’s helmet ensure that:

The straps aren’t twisted and form a v shape under the child’s ear
The straps are tightened but allow you to put your fingers between the strap and the child’s chin
The helmet is tightened from the back to make sure it isn’t loose enough to wobble

Please SHARE this post with your parent friends to remind them of how important this is.
