'Millions of people taking cholesterol-lowering statins don’t need them. A new study shows that as many of 40% of those patients that doctors have put on the world’s most heavilyprescribed - and intensely marketed - drugs will be able to stop them if new guidelines come into force.
Publishing in JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre and University
of Michigan. examined the potential impact of proposed new PREVENT equations, released by the American Heart Association in November 2023 to update the way doctors assess patients’ risk of heart attack or stroke. If adopted, the number of adults recommended for statins could decrease from 45.4 million to 28.3 million'. (IHCAN News)
