One way to improving mental health is to take time to notice the little things in your everyday life that bring you joy. We call these Glimmers. Due to the busyness of life it is all to easy to not even notice them. For me the sound of a robin singing or seeing a snowdrop are some of the simple moments that bring me that joy.

It’s World Mental Health Day today. Mental Health is a human right so wherever you are and whoever you meet be kind. A smile or a kind word can make all the difference to someone’s day. Just because someone is out doesn’t mean everything is ok in their world. If you can why not make that small difference to their day?
And if you’re struggling reach out, there is no shame in not being ok and so many people are there to help.

It is daunting seeing a counsellor for the first time. However, use the first session to decide if you feel comfortable with the counsellor. It’s so important to have the right counsellor for you.

It can be a big step to see a therapist for the first time, especially if you don't know what to expect.

While every therapist will have their own way of starting with a new client, there are some things that will always be covered.

Your first session is an opportunity for you to make sure you feel comfortable with your therapist, and to explain the problems you’re experiencing.

It's Mental Health Awareness Week, with a particular focus on anxiety. Anxiety can seriously impact and limit the life you lead, in which case you may need help. When we're feeling stressed there are a number of ways we can calm ourselves. I will be adding resources over the coming weeks to help you boost your resilience.
My favourite is through the use of breathing. Breathe in through your nose for a count of 4-5, then breathe out through your mouth for a count of 7-8.
As you breathe out notice your body start to relax, your shoulders drop and your jaw feel less tense.
Take at least 5 breaths to calm your nervous system, but if you need more then take more. I have attached a video which may be of help.
Of course like everything practice makes perfect, so practice this now even if you're feeling calm and notice the positive impact it has.
If feeling stressed and anxious is a regular part of your life counselling may be helpful. I currently have availability for face to face or online counselling.
