1. There is NO single ‘correct’ posture despite common posture beliefs, there is no strong evidence that one optimal
posture exists or that avoiding ‘incorrect postures’ will prevent back pain.

2. Differences in postures are a fact of life
There are a few natural variations in spinal curvatures but none are strongly associated with pain. Pain should not be attributed to relatively ‘normal’ variations.

3. Posture reflects beliefs and mood
Posture can offer insights into a person’s emotions, thoughts and body image. Some postures
are adopted as a protective strategy and may reflect someone’s concerns regarding body vulnerability.
Getting to know the reasons behind preferred postures can be useful.

4. It is safe to adopt more comfortable postures Comfortable postures vary between individuals. Exploring different postures, including those
frequently avoided, and changing habitual postures may provide symptomatic relief.

5. The spine is robust and can be trusted
The spine is a robust, adaptable structure, capable of safely moving and loading in a variety of postures. Common warnings to protect the spine are not evidence-informed and can lead
to fear.

6. One size does not fit all
Postural and movement screening does not prevent pain in the workplace. Preferred lifting styles are influenced by the naturally varying spinal curvatures and advice to adopt a specific posture or to brace the core is not evidence-based.

Anxiety can be a real challenge and a burden on your life, which we’d like to help you with.

Those suffering may seem completely ‘normal’ to their friends, family and work colleagues, or even ‘just a little down in the dumps’, but left untreated, anxiety can become a real challenge with daily life.

So what is Anxiety and when does it become a real challenge?

It is really important to understand that the symptoms of anxiety vary between people.
Some will only experience a few symptoms, while others will experience many.
The key thing to note is not the number of symptoms, but their severity.
Most of us will experience one or more of the following feelings or emotions during times of stress, but if we can’t seem to shake them, or they become worse, we need to consider getting professional help.

Symptoms of anxiety include (but not limited to):

🔹Feeling frightened, nervous or in a state of panic

🔹Not feeling hungry – very little appetite

🔹Inability to concentrate – making mistakes and being forgetful

🔹Problems sleeping – being tired and irritable during the day

🔹Feeling light headed – inability to focus

🔹Heart races or feels like it’s thumping out of your chest

🔹Irritable bowels – stomach cramps, upset stomach

🔹Excessive worrying – turning things over in your mind all the time

🔹Controlling behaviour – the need to take control of situations or relationships

🔹It may be that you can’t remember the last time that you felt relaxed or seem to be constantly ‘on edge’. This is called ‘General Anxiety Disorder’ and is a long term condition that causes you to feel anxious about a range of situations rather than just one event.

Whether your anxiety is long-term or due to a recent period in your life which is causing worry like an exam, work stress or a troubling event, you should seek help as soon as you can.

Firstly, seek advice from your GP to ensure that any of the symptoms aren’t the cause of an underlying health condition. Your GP may prescribe medication or refer you to a therapist or a therapy service through the NHS. Please ensure you are fully aware of how the medication works, possible side effects and if there may be any reaction with other medications you are taking.

If you are not keen to visit your GP or do not want to attend an NHS provided service, you can get support from me at Bideford Therapies.

How will counselling help?

My treatment technique is to help you to identify the cause of your anxiety so we can provide you with long-term relief. We will find ways to cope that suit you while you are recovering and you will learn how to identify any anxiety or panic attacks before they occur so you can prevent them or lessen their severity.

If you wish, we can use hypnotherapy which can often speed up recovery, but only if you are fully comfortable and ready.

Don’t suffer with anxiety – get help. It may only take a few sessions and your mental health is worth it. It will only take a few hours to help you cope with the rest of your life.

I look forward to being able to help you.
