Face fit testing this morning — always a bit comical (hood on, exercises, and reading the rainbow passage out loud!), but it’s seriously important.

For anyone working with dust or airborne hazards, a proper fit test ensures your RPE actually protects you — and it’s a legal requirement under UK health & safety law.

People often ask how I got into Health & Safety. It actually started years ago, inspired by my stepfather before he passed away. Since then, my long-term industry experience has led me to support PQQs, SSIPs, tendering, ISO auditing, and more recently NPORS and CITB centre requirements. Today, we have published our annual work-related fatality statistics.

The figures show 124 workers lost their lives in work-related incidents in Great Britain during 2024/25, down by 14 from last year.

Construction and agriculture remain the highest-risk sectors, with falls from height the most common cause of fatal injuries.

Sarah Albon, Chief Executive said: "Each death represents a tragedy for families, friends and communities. Fatal accidents are not an inevitable part of working life."
