🚨 EXCITING LAUNCH ANNOUNCEMENT! 🚨
Today, SKCIN are incredibly proud to launch 'Expose The Glow' - a brand-new interactive education initiative for secondary schools designed to tackle the growing influence of tanning misinformation and harmful UV trends targeting young people online. ☀️📱
Expose The Glow is a youth-informed, classroom experience that transforms students into “misinformation detectives”, challenging them to investigate real-world online claims through discussion, interaction and voting - exposing the truth behind each claim and encouraging safer, more informed choices.
👉 Why does this matter?
Because social media is increasingly normalising dangerous tanning behaviours, from the glamorisation of sunburn to misleading messaging around sunbeds, tanning products and sunscreen.
Our, ongoing survey of 11–18-year-olds revealed:
▪️ More than 3 in 4 young people actively try to get a tan
▪️ 63% say social media encourages tanning
▪️ 61% regularly see tanning “hacks” or trends online that make tanning appear desirable
Worryingly, 92% report having experienced sunburn, with nearly 3 in 10 experiencing 1 or more blistering sunburns (a major risk factor for skin cancer).
Yet melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, remains one of the leading causes of cancer death in young adults in the UK, with sunburn and tanning behaviours among the greatest preventable risk factors.
Around 9 in 10 skin cancers are preventable, and the damage done during adolescence has a huge impact on risk in adulthood.
Launching across pilot secondary schools ahead of a wider rollout, SKCIN are proud to continue to lead the way in skin cancer prevention with this important new national initiative improving UV safety awareness among young people.
💚 We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the incredible Tropic Skincare Ambassador community, whose fundraising and support helped make this important initiative possible.
