Did you know that addiction is classified in the DSM-5? It’s a mental illness that lives in the brain stem: the same brain stem that serves a critical role in regulating certain involuntary actions of the body, including heartbeat and breathing. Addicts feel that they need their drug of choice (DOC) the same way they feel they need to breathe.

Did you know that our society treats addiction as a moral issue and pawns it off on law enforcement to “control”? The average stay in jail being 365 days or less. Where addicts are left to detox alone ?

Did you know the detox process can be violent and result in death if not monitored by medical professionals?

Did you know the addict is many times released, and at that time, their serotonin levels are at their lowest, leading to a high crime rate and a higher chance in relapse. It’s a pun to say that this is criminal but that’s exactly what this really is ....criminal.

It takes an average of 14-16 months of sobriety for an addict’s brain to balance serotonin levels to that of a neuro-typical brain. Did you know that?

Did you know that 136 people die everyday from opioid overdose? That’s one person every 10.58 minutes. By the time you’re done reading and processing this post, someone will have died from an opioid overdose.
Someone’s child.
Someone’s spouse.
Someone’s parent.
Someone’s brother/sister.
Someone’s friend.
Someone’s aunt/uncle.

Let that sink in.

Did you know that the two biggest factors that “make” an addict are
1. Genetic Predisposition
2. Childhood trauma
There’s not that “one hit” or that “one decision” that will make an addict. You never really know who is or is not an addict before they ever even pick up. It’s NOT a moral problem. I repeat, addiction is NOT A MORAL PROBLEM.

Just for a minute let’s take this in a little bit of a different direction. Did you know that the BRCA gene for breast cancer has a 5-10% genetic predisposition rate? People every day undergo testing and life changing surgeries to avoid it but addiction genetic predisposition is over 50%.
O V E R 5 0 %. Let that sink in.
You still think addiction is a moral problem? A parenting problem?
Too bad there isn’t a surgery to remove addiction huh ?

If there’s one thing an addict would say….it’s that they’re still in there.
(I know because I’ve asked.) The person that you knew and loved is still in there.

They are not their disease.

THEY ARE NOT THEIR DISEASE.

Addiction is a disease. Much like diabetes. It has to be monitored everyday. For the rest of their lives. And it’s HARD. It takes support and unrelenting diligence. Like cancer in that it can always reoccur.

The blaming needs to stop. We need to do better.
The paradigm needs to change.
The NHS provision needs to change.
Public awareness needs to change.

Period.

The next time you hear someone say “ they have a choice “ or you hear others refer to addicts as “a junkie“ start by educating them because that really is how this works.

You can make a difference you can change things. It starts with educating yourself and then spreading that knowledge one person at a time. ❤

What is Person-Centred Counselling?
You have wisdom living within yourself and learning how to access that wisdom is part of the role of the therapist who uses a person-centred approach. In person-centred therapy, you are in charge, leading the way and this gives the client a great deal of space for self-discovery.

Many believe that in a typical therapy session, the therapist asks questions, guides the process, and offers solutions. Many people want to hear solutions from the therapist and are looking for guidance. This type of therapy and approach can be helpful in certain situations where the counsellor is teaching the client-specific skills or helping with a crisis situation.

At Clear Vue Trauma Counselling, we strongly believe that all the wisdom lives within you and having a person-centred approach to therapy is very important to us in our work.
In this type of therapy, the client takes the lead in discussions and comes up with the answers and insight for themselves through very reflective questions. This non-authoritative approach allows clients to have more space and agency in the process. It empowers and motivates the patient during therapy.

The purpose of this type of therapy is to help you by looking within yourself. It also lets you come up with solutions to correct any thoughts or behavioural flaws that are setting you back or causing you pain.

The Nature of Person-Centred Counselling
The aim of Roger’s client-centred counselling is not to target flaws and problematic behaviour and thoughts. His therapeutic approach focuses on making people actualize their potential. Human beings have intrinsic capacities to understand themselves and make changes from this knowledge. They can change their attitudes, concepts, and behaviours if they are aware of their true self.
With non-directive therapy, the client is encouraged to focus internally. The intrinsic analysis helps the client identify their beliefs, perceptions, attitude, values, and problems. After the self-evaluation, a person can make changes where it is required to come to a real understanding of themselves. The point of finding out your true nature is called self-actualization.

Elements of the Therapy Session

As the name of the Rogerian therapy suggests, counselling is self-directed. The client gets to control their intervention. Therapists do not offer insights, provide solutions, or ask leading questions during counselling. They are an equal partner with the client during therapy.
Therapy sessions also take an empathetic approach. The counsellor seeks to understand the client’s emotional and mental perspective and acknowledges their experience throughout each session. By putting themselves in the client’s shoes, they are in a better position of understanding the patient. Additionally, the counsellor mirrors the client’s feelings and thoughts so that the client can better understand their feelings, perspective, and line of thinking. Roger’s approach increases the client’s self-awareness leading them to self-direct toward change. Empathy also boosts the client’s confidence.

The counselling session is non-directive. The therapist does not guide the client in a particular direction. Additionally, the counsellor provides unconditional positive regard and support. Positivity is vital in building confidence and encouraging honesty. The counsellor does not pass judgment on the client. No matter what is shared or expressed during therapy.

The opposite of unconditional support is conditional support. Here, the client is only supported when they meet certain therapeutic expectations. Unconditional support enhances candidness during therapy. The client can express their emotions: fear, anger, resentment, and misery without any form of condemnation.
Counselling is based on genuineness and authenticity. The counsellor demonstrates this by being honest in their sharing to encourage the client to be sincere. The positive environment helps the client develop an open view of the world and how they see themselves.

Self-Actualization

The primary objective of Person-centred counselling is to help clients find their true selves without deviating from reality. There is a lot of distortion of the understanding of self. The conflict between this perception and reality creates incongruence. For instance, if someone says they are good at athletics and fail to perform in the field, their thoughts about themselves and reality do not align.
Through non-directive counselling, incongruence becomes apparent to the client, enabling them to adjust where needed. These changes are what lead the client to a real understanding of self. The process is called self-actualization. Everyone distorts reality. Through this therapy, people can get a better understanding of themselves without any misconstrues.

Welcome

My name is Debra. I am the co-founder of Clear Vue Trauma Counselling.

Life is hard for many of us and having a safe space to talk and be listened to, without fear of judgement or others opinions being foisted on us, is paramount to our health and well-being. Talking therapies are more relevant today than ever, as many of us are isolated and struggle in our relationships and lives. All types of mental health issues can be helped with psychotherapy. Medication is not the answer for many of us, it doesn’t help us to understand and change our feelings and responses to others. Please call for a free initial telephone consultation

I specialise in women’s issues and trauma. I have worked with drug and alcohol misuse for 3 years now, however , this encompasses many mental health conditions, domestic abuse, bullying, low self esteem, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, food issues and others. I work with different types of therapy , depending on my client’s issues.

I understand how hard it is to take that initial step and reach out for help, I would encourage you, though, to take that step and let me help you to transform your life for the better.

Welcome again to Clear Vue Trauma counselling.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps us understand our problems by looking at the links between our thoughts, feelings and behaviours and how they impact on one and other. CBT supports the idea that depression and all anxiety disorders persist through what are known as maintenance cycles. That is, to facilitate growth and recovery, we can employ interventions and learn skills to change how we think which in turn alleviates the distressing feelings we experience. The same can be achieved by changing/modifying our behaviour. Ultimately, individuals come to therapy because they want to gain insight into why they feel the way they do and change this in order to live a more fulfilling life.

IF this sounds like you. Don’t hesitate, visit the page for contact details. We provide a free 15 minute consultation to see if we are the right service for you. Don’t delay start your therapeutic journey today.

We look forward to working with you.
