And just a quick post because I listened to a very interesting podcast which I thought would be good for us to think about as we enter this fresh year ahead.

Where do our challenges arise? Most of our challenges arise by how we see ourselves, as suggested in this quote by Charles Horton Cooley (you may like to read if through a couple of times).

"The challenge today is, I’m not what I think I am, I’m not what you think I am, I’m what I think you think I am."

Meaning that we live in a perception of a perception of ourselves. We are basing how we feel about ourselves on what we think someone thinks of us. Yet we can never truly know. We can therefore not pursue things in life because we think other people value them.

Set your intentions for yourself✨

Happy New Year to you all! I am sure for many, it was a very different Christmas and New Year, although still enjoyable I hope.

For us, in the Burdett household, it was a lot less frantic than usual. We spent lots of time eating, playing games and generally taking things slow. Probably one of the most nourishing Christmas breaks yet.

Have you set any intentions for 2021? Small things you can build into your day to support, nourish and bring you joy.

We discussed ours over breakfast on Friday morning. Those things we want to bring forward into the year and those we hope to leave behind. They were varying, but one which came up for all of us, was reducing the amount of time we spend on our screens. After enjoying a couple of weeks of not logging onto emails, checking social media or generally looking on our phones and ipads for no real reason, it felt good. Freeing!

I have therefore decided that my social media presence (although very small anyway) is going to be even smaller for a while. Time to embrace the 'being' rather than the 'doing' …

umh, did I mention the home schooling too!

I am still teaching and coaching, so if you need me I haven't gone haywire and you know where to find me :0)

Wishing you all love, good health and positivity for the month and beyond xx

I wanted to wish you all a very merry Christmas Eve and spread a little joy and magic 🎄

Thank you Joanna, for letting me share this. A beautiful voice to match a beautiful soul.

Merry Christmas everyone 💕

I think the announcement on Saturday and the disappointment felt by so many summed up the general feeling for the year 2020!

It is easy to feel negative right now. I myself was looking forward to seeing family I haven’t seen for months. However, we all need to keep safe and well so we can share many more treasured moments in the new year.

Before this year passes see if you can take a moment to acknowledge the good things, the happy occasions, the lessons you have learnt and want to take into the new year ahead. There will be many ... they are just hiding behind the negativity bias and emotion.

SO, stand tall, bring a smile to your lips, light into your eyes and wish yourself a little Christmas joy 🎄

How we start our day can really affect our mood and like a domino effect influence our actions.

I challenge you this weekend to start your day with a mindful morning wake-up :0)

Open your eyes with a smile (even if you don't feel like smiling!), say "good morning" to yourself, take a few moments to notice any sensations and then take a good stretch. Viola!

I have just submitted my final assignment for the course I have been attending this year, Integrating Mindfulness and Compassion in Professional Practice. Part of the course entailed recording a 6-week detailed log of my daily 30 minute meditation practice. I felt such resistance to complete it but pulling on my 'big girl' pants I got on with it.

Anyway, I wanted to share an excerpt. I feel out of my comfort zone sharing this, like I am un******ng in front of you all BUT I am hoping it may encourage you when you are struggling with your own practice. It is important for us to remember that things in life do not always feel easy, especially our meditation practice. It can feel hard work, scary and at times overwhelming. However, when we keep exploring and working with ourselves, it can provide invaluable insight and unlock the negative patterns we have formed over the years.

Here it is ...

"What has really developed for me during this 6-week practice is just how hard and critical I am of myself. I have always known that, but I think I underestimated the extent of my voice of judgment. The expectation I have on myself is one I wouldn’t expect from anyone else and I really noticed that. I am constantly striving and trying to achieve … for what purpose? To show I am more than just ‘mum’ these day or proving that being a ‘cancer survivor’ and all the life changes that have accompanied that, haven't brought me down? I am still working on it! This process has really elevated my self-compassion. As the weeks passed, I was more able to bring a loving kindness to myself. Some days I found it hard to sit and be with myself, as the mind was so frantic and ready to get ‘doing’ and my physical body struggled to sit still as the adrenaline pumped. I would then get frustrated with myself, as I wanted that pause (and some quietness) and so rather than just sitting with it, I started striving to create that experience. Six weeks on, I feel I am less hard on myself, less critical, less expecting. Trying to view my own shortcomings with kindness, nonjudgment and understanding, I remind myself that, all humans have shortcomings, and I am after all, human!”

“Talk the talk, walk the walk” ...

My own self-care:

Burning fire, Christmas decs, joggers, slipper socks and an empty glass of the latest Cloudy Cotswolds Christmas Gin, all whilst reading Ginned! (the Craft Gin Club’s monthly magazine).

Friday night bliss ✨

A few thoughts on self compassion ...

Humans are mammals and by that very nature we are built with a need to be connected to others, comforted and nurtured. Often in this frantic, busy world we live in, we forget that we need this care and comfort, often feeling it’s selfish to offer ourselves the time to do so. The result of this however can be detrimental to our wellbeing and all those around us.

When we feel that lack of care and nurture, we can become distant and disengaged with others.

So, how can we build this care into our day-to-day lives?

Self-soothing exercises. These can be discreet, swift and powerful. They bring an instant physical release of the hormone oxytocin, which can help us instantly enhance the feelings of calm, love, care and nurture.

How?

A short pause to check in with yourself and offer yourself some care ...

1) You could try tracing one hand with the index finger of your opposite hand, noticing the sensations and how it feels to be engaged with the sense of touch

2) You may like to massage the forehead which stimulates the vagus nerve, providing an instantaneous calming effect

3) Carrying a handkerchief with a couple of drops of essential oil, such as lavender or an essential oil roller ball which can be rolled onto your pulse points would also be effective. Once inhaled a few times the smell can really evoke a sense of calm and stability.

These are just a few of the self-soothing exercises you can explore which will allow you to keep your heart open and help you care/nurture yourself.

Enjoy the weekend ahead with love and a smile 😊

Quote for the weekend ...

“As you look back on your life, you will often realise that many of the times you thought you were being rejected from something good, you were in fact being redirected to something better.

You can’t control everything.

Sometimes you just need to relax and have faith things will work out. Let go and just let life happen the way it’s supposed to.

Sometimes the outcomes you can’t change end up changing you and helping you grow mentally, emotionally or spiritually.

When things fall apart, consider the possibility that life knocked them down for a reason. It was not to punish you, but to prompt you to build something better to fit your personality and your purpose.

Sometimes things fall apart so better things can fall together.”

Equanimity – a mental calmness and evenness of temper, especially in a difficult situation. It refers to a mind that is at peace even in the face of a stressful and unpleasant experience.

As we embark on the new rules and restrictions, I am going to read, daily, this short passage by Ajahn Chah.

“If you let go a little, you will have a little peace. If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of peace. If you let go completely, you will know complete peace and freedom. Your struggles with the world will have come to an end.”

So today I am embracing the sunshine like a huge hug 🤗 and passing it on to you.

The beginning ...

A corporate solicitor working in the City of London to a wellbeing coach & yoga teacher working wherever the wind blows!!

A cancer diagnosis and the journey that accompanies it, shifted both my perspective on life and career. Having always dabbled in yoga, it became an absolute lifeline during treatment and afterwards. Through yoga and mindfulness I found a tool and learnt to give myself permission to rest, understand, adapt and heal.

Needing something for myself, I made the decision to study again …. a diploma in Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques, Mindfulness Based Stressed Management and Yoga Teacher Training. Predominately taken to increase my own wellbeing, I began to share with family and friends. Sharing both knowledge and experience, I started to witness a positive change in those I worked with and this just fuelled my passion for yoga and mindfulness. It was time to start a new journey … wellbeing coach & yoga teacher!
