Exactly 1 year ago I moved Billericay Sports Therapy to .billericay from its original location on Chapel Street. After 17 years it was a big and somewhat daunting decision to move but one which I felt confident was right and one year on I can happily confirm it has been a very good move 😊

Thanks to for inviting me and my practice to her wonderful Yoga club. A fantastic facility, not only having the best Sports Therapy practice in town 🙊😂 the Yoga club has two fantastic Studios, a co-working area, great Yoga instructors and a lovely atmosphere.

If I haven’t seen you here yet, I look forward to doing so in the future……not that I wish upon you any pain or injury of course 😂. With that said, as well as treating injuries and seeing patients for health and breathing issues I do also supply routine, maintenance check ups and Deep Tissue Sports Massage 😊

After a fracture and being immobilised in a plaster cast it’s vitally important to start rehab right away and this starts with regaining as much movement and range as possible

Good Diaphragm function is critical for good muscle function, posture and core function. It is also allows for full lung function and capacity as well as activating a parasympathetic neural response 😊

Back in Sept 2023 I posted here in reference to Iga Swiatek and how she confused the world when she was seen and photographed training with her mouth taped up.

Why does Iga Swiatek tape her mouth during training?
To:
- Build CO₂ tolerance
- Lower resting heart rate
- Strengthen the diaphragm
- Improve focus under fatigue
- Train her nervous system to stay calm under pressure

Well now she is the new Wimbledon champion 🥇🎾

More and more people including top sports stars are starting to realise and understand the importance of good breathing and its effect and importance on quietening and calming the nervous system.

“I felt just good and in the zone,” she said after the semi-final win over Belinda Bencic. “I was focused from the beginning till the end. So it was a really solid performance.”

That’s the power of good functional breathing — a quiet nervous system, steady focus, and full-body composure.

From breathwork between points to taped-mouth drills in training, Świątek’s approach isn’t just about performance. It’s about recovery and focus under pressure.

Billericay Sports Therapy is a registered Buteyko and Oxygen Advantage practice and I have been working with patients and athletes for the past 6+ years helping them to improve their breathing and hence athletic performance.

On top of this we also saw Novak Djokovic and his physio doing Diaphragm activations on court during this year’s Wimbledon, another technique used on every day patients here at Billericay Sports Therapy 😊💪🏼

When you come to Billericay Sports Therapy you can be sure in the knowledge that you are getting the same up to date, advanced treatment methods that are applied to top level sports stars 😊

It doesn’t matter if you can run 1 mile, 3 miles, 6 miles or 20 miles…..if you are using your mouth to breath whilst doing light exercise like jogging then you are unlikely to preserve long term health.

If however you are jogging solely breathing in and out through your nose then you stand a far greater chance of maintaining and even improving your long term health, no matter what distance you run.

Why is this? Well, when using your nose to breath during exercise you are, amongst other things:

✅ Increasing oxygen delivery to working muscles and cells

✅ Lightening the load placed on your heart by lowering your working heart rate.

✅ Increasing resistance upon your Diaphragm which improves lung volume

✅ Delaying the onset of Fatigue

✅ Improving blood circulation by increasing Carbon Dioxide and Nitric Oxide levels

It takes time to improve respiratory function, the same as it does cardiovascular function but conditioning both together leads to improved health and longevity. Conditioning the cardiovascular system with no thought to respiratory function will likely lead you to poorer health in the long run.

That’s my tip of the day 😉😂👍🏼
