✨MAKE YOUR OWN MAGIC✨
My favourite part of class is the beginning. When I invite everyone to shake, wiggle, and dance their stress away. So I thought I’d share this video of me doing just that this morning (in case my regulars are missing this ridiculous spectacle after a two week break lol)
The reason I love it is because when we dance/shake/wiggle, we release endorphins and lower our cortisol levels, bringing our nervous system into a more regulated state to boot.
And lately my nervous system has been all over the shop. I’ve had moments where I feel like I’ve forgotten all the wisdom and lessons, and then beaten myself up for it. And then beaten myself up for beating myself up about it.
I keep having to bring myself back to the reminder that life is unpredictable, exciting, stressful, chaotic, challenging, and myriad other things. And that’s OK! Our response will not always be to ride the waves with a zen like steadfastness, sometimes we get swept up. And that’s OK too!
Allowing yourself to feel ALL of the emotions - excitement, nerves, overwhelm, passion, lethargy is a good reminder of our humanity. And there’s always something to be learnt from moments of turbulence.
So...what’s the lesson I need today? And maybe you do too?
Write your own story. Find your own magic. Suck the marrow out of life. Stop second guessing yourself. Life isn’t meant to be easy. Give yourself a bloody break and sometimes just let yourself be the messiest, wildest, maddest, weirdest you. EMBRACE IT.
Finally, one of my favourite poems, by the great Sufi mystic, Rumi, because it feels particularly apt.
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
