πŸ“’ Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) – Weight Loss Use

You may have seen recent news about Mounjaro (tirzepatide) becoming available on the NHS for weight loss.

To clarify:
➑️ While Mounjaro is already used in the NHS for managing type 2 diabetes, its use for weight loss is being introduced in a very limited way, with strict national and local restrictions.
➑️ At present, there is no local prescribing pathway in place through North East and North Cumbria ICB, which means:

❗ We are not currently able to prescribe Mounjaro for weight loss at this GP surgery.
❗ Please do not book an appointment to request this medication, as we are unable to issue it at this time.

For awareness, the initial NHS rollout of Mounjaro for weight loss will only consider patients who meet all of the following criteria:

BMI of 40 or above (or 37.5 or above for some ethnic minority groups),

Plus at least four of the following health conditions:

High blood pressure

High cholesterol

Type 2 diabetes

Sleep apnoea

Heart disease

Even if you meet these criteria, access will be via a specialised local pathway once it is in place. At present it is not yet available, or set up via the ICB.

We’ll provide updates as soon as local guidance changes. Thank you for your understanding and support.

We understand that there's significant interest in weight loss medications, particularly following the news around products like Wegovy/Ozempic. However, we need to clarify our stance and current circumstances regarding such treatments.

Key Information:

🚫 We Do Not Prescribe for Weight Loss: Given the current situation, our practice will not and cannot prescribe weight loss injections, including those similar to Wegovy.

πŸ“ˆ Increased Demand & Shortages: There's been a surge in the off-label use of certain medications for weight loss, leading to supply shortages. These medications are crucial for managing blood glucose in type 2 diabetes patients, and their availability is a priority.

πŸ” Wegovy and Availability: Although Wegovy has gained attention as a weight loss medication, its supply in the UK is controlled and limited. It's primarily for patients meeting specific criteria in specialist NHS weight management services.

🚨 Safety & Regulation: It's essential to understand that obtaining any medication without a prescription, especially online, is not only illegal but potentially harmful. Always consult with healthcare professionals before considering new treatments.

What Can You Do?

🀝 If you're concerned about your weight, please discuss with us or your healthcare professional. There are various alternative methods, structured education, and potential referrals to weight management programmes.

πŸ“ž For broader concerns or information on the current scenario, consider contacting the Diabetes UK Helpline at 0345 123 2399.

πŸ“£ NHS Autumn Vaccination Update! πŸπŸ’‰

The NHS Covid-19 vaccination programme is making waves! In just a week:
βœ… 1.16 million autumn covid jabs delivered.
βœ… Over 2.8 million flu jabs given since 11th September.

A double win for many, receiving both their covid and flu vaccines in one go. Care home residents were among the first beneficiaries, with NHS teams reaching over 4,616 care homes.

Invitations for flu and COVID-19 vaccinations were sent to around 1.5 million eligible adults last week, with a whopping 4.1 million set to be invited this week. Parents of 2-3 year-olds, don’t forget to check your inboxes for flu and MMR vaccination reminders!

Booking made easy! Over a million appointments booked via the NHS website, App, and hotline. Notably, almost 25% used the App πŸ“±.

🚨 Be Informed: A new COVID-19 variant, BA.2.86, has emerged. Hospital covid patients jumped from 1,000 in July to over 2,800 by mid-September.

Steve Russell, National Director for Vaccinations, states: β€œIt is a huge feat... The NHS is once again pulling out all the stops to deliver lifesaving vaccinations... Not only will these vaccinations protect you and your loved ones... but they will also help to protect the NHS. So please... book your vaccine today.”

Gavin Dabrera from UKHSA adds: β€œThese early uptake figures are encouraging... it remains important that everyone eligible for the vaccine comes forward.”

Minister Maria Caulfield praises the strong start and says: β€œI’m grateful to the hard-working staff delivering these life-saving jabs...”

With winter on the horizon, this vaccination campaign is critical. Over 30 million in England are eligible for a free flu shot, and over 20 million for a covid jab.

Special note for mums-to-be: Any stage in your pregnancy is safe for the vaccine. If unsure, chat with your health professionals. πŸ’¬πŸ€°

Last winter saw 21 million flu jabs and 17 million covid jabs. The mission continues!

Under-18s due for seasonal vaccinations, stay tuned for updates.

πŸ“Œ Please contact us to book in for your flu/COVID vaccines!

πŸ“’ Head Lice & Nits Alert!

As kids return to school, there's a surge in head lice queries. NHS website visits to the head lice advice page jumped by 34% this month!

Remember: Head lice prefer head-to-head contact, not dirty hair. Check all family members and treat if necessary.

Dame Ruth May, Chief Nursing Officer for England, shared: β€œHead lice and nits are a common issue, especially among young children and families in close contact with one another. Once detected, there is no need to consult a GP, but treatment should begin immediately and all household members should be checked and treated to stop further spread.”.

πŸ’‘ Best way to treat head lice:

Wash hair with ordinary shampoo.
Smother hair in any conditioner.
Comb from root to tip with a fine-toothed detection comb.
Repeat on days 1, 5, 9, and 13.
Ensure everyone is lice-free on day 17.

For more details, visit the NHS website's head lice and nits advice page (which also talks about the medicated shampoos available). Stay informed, stay nit-free! 🌟
