Overthinking often shows up as a way to suppress emotions. If you find yourself stuck in your head, going around and around, you might be trying to analyse instead of feel. Follow me on here if you want to know more.

What if the reason we overthink everything is so we donโ€™t have to feel our real feelings?

What would you change?

No one taught you this about emotions.

Growing up, most of us learned to push feelings away, ignore them, or feel ashamed for having them in the first place. But here's what I have learned as a therapist, your emotions are not the enemy. They are messengers trying to tell you something important so we need to learn to feel them.

However, when you've experienced trauma, emotions can feel like they're taking over. Your heart races, your mind spirals, and suddenly you're '๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ' instead of here in the present moment.

Learning to work with your emotions, rather than against them, is one of the most powerful skills you can develop. But you need some simple grounding practices first, so that you can feel safe enough to feel them.

This 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise is a good place to start.

When your thoughts keep looping and you can't seem to find your way out, it's usually because those thoughts haven't been given a chance to become feelings. I know that might sound backwards. Aren't we supposed to think our way through things?

Here's what I see time and again in my therapy room: our minds can analyse, overthink, and problem-solve all day long, yet we still feel stuck. That's because thoughts alone don't always complete the cycle. Your body holds emotions that need to be felt, not just thought about.

When we live in our heads, we're essentially hovering above the very thing that needs our attention. Change happens when you give yourself permission to feel, not just think.

I've created a ๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐——๐—™ ๐—ด๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ท๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด that will help you start moving those thoughts into feelings. It's gentle, practical, and designed specifically for when you feel stuck in that mental loop.

The work is not in the thinking. The work is in the feeling.

We've all been taught to "think our way through" everything, analyse, rationalise, problem-solve. But healing doesn't always happen in our heads. In my experience, the breakthrough comes when we finally allow ourselves to feel what we've been avoiding. When we stop overthinking and start being present with the emotions we've buried. That's where real change happens.

If you're tired of living in your head and ready to reconnect with what your body and heart have been trying to tell you, you're in the right place.

This is one of the most important shifts in healing, and it's something we don't talk about enough. As children, we needed someone else (ideally an adult) to help us calm down when we were upset. They soothed us, held us, helped our nervous system feel safe. This is known as co-regulation and we needed it from someone else first, so that we can learn how to do it for ourselves.

But if that co-regulation wasn't consistent, or if you experienced trauma, your nervous system might still be looking for outside reassurance, which means you can feel lost when you're alone with big emotions.

Self-regulation is not about never needing others. It's about having your own toolkit, and trusting your own capacity to access your calm. The beautiful thing is that self-regulation can be learned, even as an adult.

I have created some handouts with 3 breathing exercises for calm. They might seem simple, but they are highly effective, especially if you practice them every day. Grab them here ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://tinyurl.com/2t5mjfdb ๐Ÿ’™

What if I told you that overthinking isn't actually your problem?

It might be uncomfortable to hear, but as a therapist, I see this every day: Overthinking is often just a very busy, very loud way of avoiding your emotions. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’จ

We stay in the "story" because the "feeling" underneath feels too big, too messy, or too "much." Weโ€™ve been taught to suppress our feelings to survive, but they don't disappearโ€”they just get stored in the nervous system.

Watch this video to find out more about overthinking and learn a simple (not easy) short practice to help you move out of your head and back into your calm.

If youโ€™re analysing everything at 3amโ€ฆ...Overthinking isnโ€™t problem-solving. Itโ€™s emotional avoidance. The work is not in the thinking, it's in the feeling.

My free journalling guide will help you start moving those thoughts into feelings.

Here's what I mean: anxiety is not the message itself, it's the messenger from your nervous system saying, "Hey, something needs attention here."

When you focus on making the anxiety go away, you miss what it's trying to tell us. Think of it like a smoke alarm. You wouldn't just remove the batteries and call it sorted, would you? You'd want to find out what's causing the smoke. With anxiety, what's usually causing the smoke are the difficult feelings we have been trying not to feel.

The feelings wheel is a simple tool that will help you identify and name the feelings that are lurking beneath the anxiety. Download it here ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://tinyurl.com/37fr2xkv
