Check out my latest article on how to tell the difference between Pain and Constructive Discomfort. Know when to push through.

No-one likes to feel uncomfortable. Many of us just want to quit whatever we are doing as soon as the feeling is unpleasant. We have heard the phrase “work through the pain,” but that is not always good advice, because if we keep pushing, we might be doing more harm than good. So, how are we supposed to know what pain to work through and what is a message from our body that (the body) has had enough? Here is a simple principle to consider:

'Pain' is unpleasant but also a message from your nervous system that you should probably modify or cease what you are doing. *If you cannot breathe-and-relax the body part or region that is feeling unpleasant, then it is most likely pain.

'Constructive Discomfort,' as I have named it, is the unpleasant feeling or sensation where it is bearable and you can still use your breath to stay relaxed in the particular area. *This is when “working through the pain” results in a positive benefit, so try to stick with it.

Message: Know when it is true Pain and don’t be afraid of the Constructive Discomfort. Getting in tune with your body will help you distinguish between the two.

What a great time at the TCS London Marathon, helping the athletes 🏃🏻‍♂️🏃🏼‍♀️recover after their 26.2 Mile journey. Before it got busy, I had time to go outside to the runner’s chute to congratulate everyone on their amazing accomplishment.

It was 2 1/2 hours after the gun started the race, and I noticed an elite South African runner standing with a fellow runner and just waiting for his coach or sponsor to collect him. It was cold and he was shivering 🥶, so I kept checking on him. 15 minutes later, he was still standing there just shaking, so I ran and got my jumper and told him to wear it, which he did and I just told him to keep it and I went back to my NSPCC post (but not before getting a photo, of course!).

All in all, great weather for the runners, great time with fellow therapists and I would say the biggest day in London was a success!

As a Sports Therapist, I’ll be at the TCS London Marathon working on the runners 🏃🏻‍♂️🏃🏼‍♀️on the NSPCC team post-race tomorrow, so if you’re running for them and need some de-cramping, come say hi! We’re at the Mall just past the Finish 🏁🥇!

If you’re running London for yourself or another charity tomorrow, best of luck and remember… the suffering is only temporary and the reward is a lifetime!
