Please see below Maria’s experience as a Bazaar mentor up at Northumbria University 🎓👇

Being a Bazaar mentor was a valuable experience for myself and my mentee. I study Psychology and this program allowed me to gain relevant volunteering experience, which can be difficult to find. As well as this, the training was incredible and being surrounded by a supportive network of others passionate about the experience was a really helpful tool which enabled us all to excel. The fact that the commitment was only 8 weeks meant that it was easy to fit around my schedule and kept it very flexible for when my mentee was available as well thus making it very accessible.

The content of the program provided the two of us with a lot of new and different ways to practice mindfulness and including a different meditation followed by a recap at the end of each session allowed us to review what we found most and least useful.

Overall, the experience was one that I would definitely encourage taking part in either as a mentor or mentee as there is definitely a lot to be gained from both roles.

When identifying problematic thoughts, ask yourself, is this a thought a fact or an opinion?

A fact is a statement that can be proven true or false.

An opinion is an expression of your own personal feelings/ emotions that cannot be proven.

‘I am not good enough.’ - is this a fact or an opinion? This problematic thought may feel factual to somebody thinking it, but if it cannot be proven true or false, and others think otherwise… it may actually be an opinion!

‘Bazaar really helped me become self aware of my thoughts and the effect they were having on my mental health. I still regularly use the tools and skills Bazaar taught me years on and I am now achieving things I never thought I would have! Having a peer mentor with shared experiences really helped me open up in a comfortable environment that felt like I was just chatting with a friend. Lee Pennington is the founder of the Open Door Charity, one of Merseyside’s most dynamic and progressive independent charities. Bazaar plays a huge role in supporting young people with their mental health and wellbeing through the at its HQ

We asked Lee why he created the charity 💭

'I was never seeking to create ODC and it was never a life aim or anything. I fell in to the idea, naturally, trying to create somewhere that me or my friends would be willing to access and which spoke to our lives in a way other support options didn’t. Over the years we have pushed boundaries and challenged the norm, but from a position of positivity, colour, creativity and joy to create something which slots into the existing well-being offer in this area perfectly.'

'As a person who has struggled with their mental health, I see Bazaar as a vital and unique tool in giving people the skills and empowerment they need in order to improve their wellbeing.

Through being a mentor at the Open Door Centre, Bazaar allowed me to truly have an impact on peoples lives, whilst not needing any expertise other than the shared lived experience. I believe if I had accessed Bazaar and learnt the skills and tools it gives people when i was much younger, I would have been much better equipped to help myself at an earlier stage.

It makes me feel so happy that lots of young people are using Bazaar in order to learn these skills and improve their lives.’
