We cannot wait to grow more, welcome more and do more together.

This week our Grow a Community Garden group planted a host of trees to create a new hedgerow at the Bentinck Street Community Garden, using a mix of native tree species to strengthen biodiversity and create long-term habitat on the site 🌱🌿.

It felt fitting to do this during National Tree Week, a moment to recognise, in Polly Higgins’s words, trees as “Nature’s most sublime sentinels” 🌳✨.

If you are inspired to celebrate trees this weekend as National Tree Week rounds off, the Tree Council has an excellent set of ideas on how to get involved. From small actions at home to local events and even a Tree Party playlist, there is plenty to explore 🎶🌲:

If you would like to learn along with us as we explore thirteen native trees over the course of 2026 with us here on our social media, we recommend getting hold of a copy of Glennie Kindred’s beguiling book Walking With Trees.

In fact, if Birkenhead is accessible to you, you can borrow a copy from the incredible Grow Wellbeing Library 📚 👀

More on that soon….

A brilliant first day today for our new Grow A Community Garden sessions 🌿💚

We had a lovely group of around eight people join us today Thursday afternoon, the atmosphere in the garden was friendly and industrious, with people enjoying the natural rhythms that being in a garden creates. A pocket of people teamed up to do some planting; another small group tackled putting up our new polytunnel, and a third cluster of folk chatted on benches in the warmth reach of the fire.

I caught up with Kate, our plant-medicine and community gardening loving forest-school practitioner who leads this new weekly group, and asked her what people can expect when they come along.

‘It’s about being in the garden: being in nature. But the focus of our Thursday afternoons is especially on community gardening, so we’re developing relationships within the group, talking about our growing experience, our growing skills, and discussing what we might want to improve on. Each week we’ll develop some gardening knowledge, as well as doing some planting, and once the poly tunnel is up, we’ll be planting inside of that as well. But it can also just be about hanging out. Today a lot of people ended up sitting round the fire and just being in nature, and watching other people work, you know? Which is great. That is what its all about.’

If you or someone in your world would enjoy a calm weekly space like this through winter, there are still plenty of spaces available.

The sessions are free and open to adults aged 18 plus, running every Thursday, 1–3pm at Bentinck Street Community Garden.

Feel free to share this post to help us reach more local people this winter.

A great start to our Winter-long Outdoor Cooking Wednesdays. ❄️🔥🥣

There was a gentle hum of relaxed togetherness and shared purpose as people gathered around the fire and sampled the soup that Kate had just demonstrated making.

The food is provided using a mix of produce grown on-site at the community garden in Bentinck Street, in conjunction with ’s Social Supermarket, and other donated or surplus foods. 🌱🍲

We are demonstrating how, with limited resources, it is possible to cook tasty, nutritious, filling dishes. We’ll be offering recipes and skills each week, both outdoor cooking skills and food-growing gardening skills. 🌿🪴🍽️

Side effects of the sessions can include:
• social opportunities and new local connections 🤝
• warming up around a fire and through movement 🔥💨
• a sense of wholeness from being outside in nature 🌲
• feeling energised and happy by the end of the morning 😊✨

There are plenty more spaces available, so if you or anyone you know, or anyone in your networks, would benefit from joining in, book on now using the link in our bio… or share, share, share to help get the word out to as many local people as possible this Winter. ❄️📣

These sessions are funded by Wirral Council’s Household Fund. 💚

We are excited to announce that today we are launching our Winter Food Growing Project.

This sees us together with partner organisations providing opportunities for communities local to our food growing gardens to learn and share skills for growing produce to take home and eat, how to cook on site outside, eat warm meals together, and make new social connections.

As part of this project, there are two new weekly sessions starting next week at the Bentinck Street Community Garden.

If these sound perfect for you, someone you know, or your networks, get over to the website and book on, or get sharing and spread the love 💚
