Due to the miserable weather and earlier rail disruptions, we’ve decided to cancel today’s LGBTQ+ group outing.

Every attempt has been made to contact those who were planning to attend.

If you’re still out and about, the Fountain Project is open for cake and coffee ☕🍰 if you fancy a cosy alternative!

Reminder for our LGBTQ+ Group 🌈

Just a quick reminder that there is no regular group session tomorrow. Instead, we’ll be heading out together to the Museum of Liverpool for our planned outing.

As part of LGBT+ History Month, this visit is a great opportunity for us to come together, reflect, and celebrate the stories and contributions of LGBTQ+ people past and present.

This outing is for people who already attend the group. If you’re a regular member, we look forward to seeing you!

If you have any questions, please get in touch. 🌈

Content warning: this post discusses historical and ongoing persecution of LGBTQIA+ people.

This month is LGBT+ History Month..

Astonishingly, it’s just 36 years since the World Health Organization (WHO) stopped treating homosexuality as a mental illness.

Yep, that’s right, only in 1990 – the year Nelson Mandela was finally released from prison in South Africa, Twin Peaks premiered on TV and Kylie topped the charts with Tears On My Pillow – did the WHO finally remove homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).

For much of the 20th century homosexuality was regarded as wrong, unnatural or sinful. The psychiatric classification was based on stigma and what was regarded as the social norm, not on science. This had a terrible impact. Conversion ‘therapy’, including drugs and electric shock treatment, was used to try to change people’s sexual orientation.

In the UK, LGBTQIA+ people continue to face discrimination and stigma. For example, conversion ‘therapy’ is still legal and still happening in the UK today to try to change people’s sexual orientation or gender identity. This is despite long-standing promises by the government to ban it. And the government’s proposed ban doesn’t include asexual, bisexual, intersex or nonbinary people, despite their experiences of conversion practices.

In more than 60 countries homosexuality is still banned, and in some countries same-sex sexual activity can be punished with the death penalty.

Systemic, oppressive and unfair treatment of those of us who are LGBTQIA+ has led us to experience higher rates of mental health problems. No one should ever be treated badly for being LGBTQIA+. We will continue to fight for better treatment of LGBTQIA+ people.

This , our love and support goes out to all LGBTQIA+ people.
