Many people with ADHD become experts at masking their struggles, so much so that they may not even realise they’re doing it at all and the cost of masking can be huge, leading to chronic stress, burnout, low self-esteem or depression.

For many people, especially women and those with inattentive ADHD, masking can lead to being completely overlooked, dismissed or receiving a late diagnosis, if they receive a diagnosis at all.

When people think of ADHD, many picture hyperactivity. But it can also look like people-pleasing, avoiding tasks, abandoned hobbies, messiness, disorganisation and paralysing overwhelm.

Its important to add that of course ADHD looks different for everyone, and not everyone will relate to these experiences.

But ultimately, someone can have it all together but need to work incredibly hard internally, much more than is ever seen, to maintain that 🩷

Working with a trauma-informed therapist is so important when we are on our healing journey.

Trauma is held in our bodies, even when we don’t remember what happened to us.

A trained trauma-informed counsellor can help you connect with old, often forgotten memories, so they can be processed and healed.

"The body keeps the score."

You've heard the phrase. You've maybe read the book. But here's what Dr. Bessel van der Kolk has spent 50 years showing us:

→ Trauma is not the event. Trauma is what gets stuck in the body when the event was too much, too fast, or too soon.

→ The thinking brain (prefrontal cortex) goes offline during trauma. The body remembers what the mind couldn't process.

→ Insight is not enough. You can know exactly what happened to you and still be physiologically captive to it.

→ Healing requires bottom-up approaches: yoga, EMDR, neurofeedback, IFS, somatic experiencing, theatre, breath, touch.

This is not woo. This is neuroscience.

And it's why our work, and the work of our faculty including Dr. van der Kolk, focuses on the body as the entry point.

Have you read The Body Keeps The Score? What part landed hardest for you?

Great to see celebrities being open about being neurodivergent and taking steps to reduce stigma!

Tom Hardy is autistic. He revealed it publicly at New York Comic Con, almost in passing — “I just sound like I’m on the spectrum. Because I am.”

He didn’t make a big deal of it at the time. But he’s been quietly making it count ever since.

He has now teamed up with BJJ brand Tatami Fightwear to promote the AUTSiders collection — a full line of Jiu-Jitsu gear celebrating neurodiversity and autism acceptance. Rashguards, shorts, and training kits featuring phrases like “Zero Eye Contact”. Bold, unapologetic, and built for the mats.

Proceeds go directly to autism charities — and Hardy has been asking his followers to recommend which organisations should benefit.

This is what using a platform actually looks like.

A lot of what Kojo says is true, but I don’t believe we HAVE autism ….. it is not an illness or condition, it is how the brain 🧠 works. I prefer to say someone IS autistic, this is non-pathologising and neuro-affirming.

As he says - Just because someone is autistic, does not mean they have a learning disability.

Very powerful video. Neurodivergent women have often had so many unhelpful labels, before being diagnosed.
