Plants will never cease to amaze me. ‘Horse tail’ equisetum arvense, an ancient primitive plant.
When lifting a plastic membrane that had previously been laid at the community allotment today, we uncovered the rhizomes of a plant not ready to give up. Horse tail is notoriously difficult to manage, due to its deep roots and spreading rhizomes. As we found today - years after being ‘smothered’ it had found a way to survive the blanket of plastic.
So whilst putting the world to rights we made horsetail wreaths and discussed the medicinal uses from tissue healing to prostatitis.

Progress today on the community allotment 🌱
After years of neglect it’s great to uncover evidence of previous planting at the site
Today - the pear tree and horsetail
Anyone who wants to come down on Saturday we will be looking at horsetail and it’s medicinal properties, and eating apples

You may have heard me mention - quite a few times - that myself and fellow medical herbalist are working on a community herbal medicine garden in Birmingham. We are looking to promote herbal medicine, create opportunities for medical herbalists and herbal students and for those with an interest in herbal medicine or community gardening. We are hoping to create a welcoming place for the local community and those who may not be local who wish to get involved in some shape or form.
Soooo if any of that sounds interesting to you, or you are just looking for something to do one day here are the dates for October 🍂 🍁

Feel free to pass on to anyone who may be interested.

We had the gorgeous setting of Packwood House, Warwickshire for Saturdays workshop where we celebrated the wonderful hedgerows and woods and their generous Autumn medicine.
The gardens at Packwood are stunning, and we were nestled in beside the Yew Garden in the gorgeous stone ‘summerhouse’. It was a real privilege to have been invited back there with Pyn to deliver our Seasonal Brew workshop, combining folklore herb-lore brew-making and story. 🍂 🍁 🍂

Hope everyone had a wonderful summer. 🌞 I had a holiday which didn’t involve working, and went back home to the NE of Scotland which was heaven, I got my fix of wild wind, rain, sea and clear rivers for a while - not to mention the very unhealthy NE Scotland delicacies of rowies, battered white pudding and macaroni pies - even more heaven.

Anyway after a beautiful bit of time out I’m back and raring to go.

First up I’ll be back this Sunday for the monthly market, I can’t wait to be back.

And if anyone wants to get involved in a community herbal medicine garden in Hodge hill Birmingham, myself and will be there this Saturday, plotting out the layout for the garden, starting to clear space for next seasons growing and generally tea drinking and chatting.
If you want to get involved or fancy coming down and see what it’s all about send me a message on here and I’ll give you more details.

Gorgeous day yesterday at the Northleigh Allotments open day where we were talking to folks about the community herbal garden. And congratulations to and family who won guess the herb competition, hope you enjoy your plant and herbal teas x
It was lovely to spend the day with folks from the herbal community and Chelsea Nikolaou, the wonderful community at the allotments, as well as everyone who popped by the stall.

We are inviting anyone whether herbalists, growers, those who are interested in learning more about herbal medicine, those who want to share their knowledge, or are interested in sustainability, community or anyone who is just curious and would like to meet new people and get involved to join us.

We are having a session at the community herbal plot on Saturday 6th September for anyone who would like to come along and get involved -
Either email us communitymedicinebrum@hotmail.com to find out more or sign up for the newsletter or Dm here.

Working in the shade in heatwave ‘god knows what number’ so far this year.
Getting signage and plants organised for Saturdays stall when myself and Emma will be at the Northleigh Road Allotments, Birmingham. The allotment site are holding their annual open day from 11 - 3pm . Me and Emma will be on a stall talking to folks about herbal medicine and our community herbal medicine garden that we’ve started at the allotments.
We’ll be posting more about the allotment and the herbal medicine project we’ve been working on, via its own social media in the future, but for now if anyone is interested to know more about our plans, how to be involved - either pop down and see us Saturday or feel free to message us on our individual social media for now or email at communitymedicinebrum@hotmail.com

We’d love for folks to get involved and be part of the garden and wider project

And how much have I missed wearing a big jumper and coat in summer 😂
