Hi Peeps!
Standing on one leg is vital after hip replacement.
For most of you that had osteoarthritis before the surgery, you probably had poor balance. Now that you are on the other side, new hip! you need to improve your balance.
Good balance has so many benefits including a reflection on your fitness levels. It helps with walking (good gait), good posture, strengthening muscles, and improving your core.
The longer you can stand on one leg the better.
It doesn't matter where you are now (2 seconds, maybe) but as long as you keep trying it gets better.
One easy way I teach my patient to remember to do it is when brushing their teeth. Yes, you would be multitasking and it's harder but you would be amazed at how stable you would become.
Another is when you are talking to someone or even at the kitchen counter waiting for the kettle to boil. (if you're British you'd know what I mean, tea time!) ☕️
You don't have to lift the leg up to your groin. You can just suspend it by bending your knee up a little.
If you want to make it harder, stand on an uneven platform, e.g. cushion, pillow, or wobble board.
Harder still? Try a squat or do something else with your arms like throwing and catching a ball on a wobble board.
Track your progress. And alternate both legs. I can usually stand for longer on my right than on my left. So working more on my left now.
How about you?
P.S. the '99 seconds' is only an arbitrary number. 😂
It's more about lengthening the time you can hold it for. 🥳
