Morning Peeps!
It's mid-week! How is your rehab going?
Guess you're on momentum and feeling better.

Have you done this recently? Overdone things because you were feeling better?
Well, I have. Silly me! ๐Ÿคฃ

So I moved house some months ago. (hate moving house).

And I had to carry this humongous furniture into the bedroom. Trying to be 'soldier sister', I over-did it. I literally heard my back give up. Like a loud sigh!

I couldn't move.

Tried to play it cool for the rest of the day. ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜Ž

The next day Monday, I couldn't get out of bed. If you've ever had back pain, you'll know what I mean.

Anyway, called in sick. I was told to 'rest and take it easy'.

But did I? ๐Ÿคญ

Got up and did some back exercises all day. Felt better the next day, so foolishly decided to go to work.

Imagine your physio (PT) hobbling towards you in pain. Yes, I was that physio. ๐Ÿคš

It was horrendous.
My patients laughed at me.
My colleagues made jest all day.
I could barely pick up any gym tools let alone do exercises with my patients.

Eventually, by mid-day, I was ousted from the clinic. Go home - doctors' orders!

And my! did I pay for that for the rest of the week.

Thankfully, my back healed. But I would never forget that day when I thought I could do more than I could.

Do you have any stories like that since you've had your hip replacement surgery? Or have you been good all this time, tell us your secret?

23/05/2022

Hi Peeps!
Happy Monday.
Did you know that your newly replaced hip joint is 6D?

Just a reminder of what your new hips can do as you start your week.
๐Ÿฅณ
For some of you, you might be restricted in certain hip movements e.g. don't cross your legs or bend to touch your feet. Follow the guidelines slatted by your surgeon.

But know this: those restrictions are not permanent. If in doubt, ask your surgeon.

If you're struggling to even move in any of these directions, don't be dismayed. Everyone had one form of deficit or the other when they started.

Maybe you don't want to be a gym goer, weightlifter, or the next ballerina. That's OK too.

But keep those hip movements going. Start with where you are and gradually increase your movement. If you're struggling or anxious you might damage something, get help.

Whatever you do, don't limit your REHABILITATION to only one or two forms of exercises e.g. walking or glute work.

Use your hip as intended - 6D.

Rooting for you as always.
You've got this ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ‘

Hi Peeps!
Standing on one leg is vital after hip replacement.

For most of you that had osteoarthritis before the surgery, you probably had poor balance. Now that you are on the other side, new hip! you need to improve your balance.

Good balance has so many benefits including a reflection on your fitness levels. It helps with walking (good gait), good posture, strengthening muscles, and improving your core.

The longer you can stand on one leg the better.

It doesn't matter where you are now (2 seconds, maybe) but as long as you keep trying it gets better.

One easy way I teach my patient to remember to do it is when brushing their teeth. Yes, you would be multitasking and it's harder but you would be amazed at how stable you would become.

Another is when you are talking to someone or even at the kitchen counter waiting for the kettle to boil. (if you're British you'd know what I mean, tea time!) โ˜•๏ธ

You don't have to lift the leg up to your groin. You can just suspend it by bending your knee up a little.

If you want to make it harder, stand on an uneven platform, e.g. cushion, pillow, or wobble board.

Harder still? Try a squat or do something else with your arms like throwing and catching a ball on a wobble board.

Track your progress. And alternate both legs. I can usually stand for longer on my right than on my left. So working more on my left now.

How about you?

P.S. the '99 seconds' is only an arbitrary number. ๐Ÿ˜‚
It's more about lengthening the time you can hold it for. ๐Ÿฅณ

Hi! and Welcome. Iโ€™m Ugo
Chartered Physiotherapist MSc. Gait Rehab Coach.

One thing that brightens up my day is when I see my hip replacement patients walk without a limp. The limp is gone forever.

They have accomplished their goal. They are walking without a limp. And you would never guess they had their hip replaced.

Theyโ€™re fitter, stronger, braver, and looking forward to the next chapter of their life.

Thatโ€™s really a good day.

Iโ€™ve been a physiotherapist for almost 20 years based in the UK. Iโ€™ve worked in the NHS, private hospital, and private clinics. And I have created and mastered a uniquely simple way of helping my hip replacement patients lose the limp. No pain but a bit of sweat! ๐Ÿ˜

Sounds like something you need help with too?

To walk without a limp. To chase the grandkids or keep up with the kids. To go for long walks. To return to work. Or hop on your bike again.

It doesnโ€™t matter if youโ€™re on 2 crutches, a walker, or a cane. As long as you have the all-clear from your surgeon, letโ€™s make your dreams happen too.

DM the words 'LIMPING' to get more details.

Speak soon.

Morning peeps!

For those of you worried to get back to the gym, the answer is, Yes! it's safe. to go to the gym after hip replacement.

Some of you might have restrictions in place so rowing for example might be delayed until you have the green light.

But yes, it is safe to return to the gym. Not immediately though. Get other exercises going first like hip active exercises, resistance exercises using elastic bands, walking, and walking unaided. Build up strength and give the new hip joint time to settle.

Not all exercises are encouraged though e.g. running, which reduces the shelf life of your hip, or martial arts (high-impact) and wrestling.

Be safe and keep going๐Ÿ‘!

What are you up to this week at the gym (home gym/outdoor gym/garden gym)? ๐Ÿ˜€

Have you checked in the mirror recently and saw that the operated hip buttock is smaller than the other?

Why?
Your gluteal muscles have shrunk. The gluteal muscles do two major things, they keep you standing (hip extension) and they take your leg outwards (hip abduction).
Shrinking occurs due to underuse.
Your body is so efficient that if you donโ€™t use it you lose it.
Most people suffered from osteoarthritis before they had THR. Sadly, two of the ill-effect of osteoarthritis are muscle weakness and limited range of motion (ROM). If you stop moving the leg outwards which tends to happen with osteoarthritis, then the muscles weaken and shrink.
And depending on the amount of shrinkage, it might become obvious when you look in the mirror.
But do not despair, one exercise that really helps is the bridge.
You can do it on your bed before you get out of bed or on a mat.
Aim to hold for 20 seconds, repeat 5 -10 times, twice daily.
Then progress using an elastic band.
Then progress with increasing your rep or using the more resistant elastic band.
Do you think your bum check is smaller than the other? Which side?

Are you walking tall and confident or limping and holding unto the trolley for support?

Limping after hip replacement is common. And the misconception is that it would go away with time. But that's usually not the case.

Sadly, I have seen patients 2, 5, 7, and even 9 years after their hip replacement still walking with a limp.
In fact, some have developed other injuries. They have back pain, knee pain, and even heel pain from all the stomping.
They might have started walking again with their crutches and they think the hip replacement didn't work.
They had concluded that the life that they were promised before their surgery didn't happen.

But it doesn't have to be your story too.

You want to work without a limp.
You want to walk tall and confident at work.
You want to keep up with your family and friends during activities.
You want to return to your missed leisure prusuits.

Am I right?

Then this is for you.

I have formulated and mastered a simple and pain-free step-by-step system to help you lose the limp fast.
I have used it on all my patients and their transformation was amazing. They not only walked without a limp. But interestingly, they 'got their life back'. They were able to do things they never thought they would do again.

I'm guessing you want the same, right?

If I were to take a look at your walking pattern (gait) and show you how you can quickly lose the limp forever, would you want to chat?

These calls are a good fit for you if:
-- you are serious about regaining a normal gait
-- you are willing to do simple guided exercises for 15 minutes daily.
-- you need help achieving goals and getting your life back.
