What does it really mean when someone is described as 'non-verbal'?

It doesn't define a person's intelligence or their ability to understand. It simply means they don't use spoken words to communicate.

Communication is so much more than speech. Behaviour itself is a powerful way for someone to express if they are happy, anxious, or in pain.

At Rehability UK, we see our job as being communication partners. This means we pay close attention to all the signs, big and small.

By creating a supportive and attentive environment, we ensure every person's voice is heard, whether it's spoken or not.

Starting the week inspired! đź’ś

Yesterday was International Women's Day, but our celebration of the incredible women in the Rehability UK community is a daily one.

From our dedicated support workers and managers to the wider team, women are at the heart of delivering compassionate, reliable care.

We also want to honour the strength and aspiration of the women we support, who inspire us as they work towards their goals and build more independent lives.

And to the mothers, sisters, and female family members who are such vital partners in care—we see you and we thank you.

What makes working in care so rewarding?

In our 'Voices From Our Team' series at RehabilityUK, we hear directly from the people who make our work possible.

This week, it's Stephen, our Head of Quality & Compliance.

He shares a short reflection on one of the things that makes working in social care rewarding.

Have a listen.

It’s a common myth that autistic people prefer to be alone. The reality is much more complex. ❤️

Many autistic people want connection and friendship just like anyone else, but social situations can be overwhelming or confusing.

Retreating to be alone is often a way to recharge from sensory overload. It’s not about rejecting people; it’s about managing energy and feeling safe.

This stereotype can lead to intense loneliness when people assume an autistic person doesn't want to be included.

At Rehability UK, our support focuses on helping individuals build connections in a way that works for them, on their own terms.

Kieran and Josh from our Peewit Road service share a love for motorsport, and so does their Senior Support Worker, Darren. 🏎️ ❤️

Darren, who volunteers as a Race Marshal at Silverstone in his spare time, suggested a day trip to the famous Silverstone Museum.

They jumped at the chance and had a fantastic time exploring the exhibits, getting up close with cars from past and present.

It's wonderful to see personal passions and community connections come together to create such memorable experiences.

When you hear the term 'learning disability,' what’s the first thing you think of?

For many, it's struggling with school or books. But its impact is much wider than that.

It can affect everyday tasks, like managing money, telling time, or understanding social cues.

Crucially, a learning disability is different for everyone. Two people with the same diagnosis can have completely different strengths and face different challenges.

That’s why our support is always truly personal—shaped around each person's specific needs and goals, to help them live well in all aspects of their life.

Meet the Stroud Forum Group! This is our monthly meeting where the people we support help shape how our services are run. ❤️

As 'experts by experience', the group members self-advocate and ensure their voices are heard in everything we do.

In our recent meeting, Adam and Jack helped review our new Keyworker policy, sharing their valuable ideas on what makes a great Keyworker.

Of course, no important work gets done without cake! A homemade Victoria Sponge fuelled this month's discussion.

From proofreading our Easy Read documents to organising a sponsored walk that raised ÂŁ1.6k for charity, their input is invaluable across the organisation.

A huge thank you to the Stroud Forum Group, and our Head of Operations South, Anita, for their continued collaboration. This work makes our services better for everyone.

What does living more independently really mean?

For many of the people we support, it’s about having more control over their own lives, making choices, and feeling confident in the everyday.

At Rehability UK, our support always starts with listening. We work with each person to understand their goals and create a plan that is truly theirs. From there, we help build confidence with practical skills like cooking, managing a budget, or using public transport. These small, consistent steps lead to a powerful sense of achievement.

A true sense of independence also comes from having a place to call home and being part of a community. We help people live in their own space where they make the rules, while also connecting with local groups, hobbies, and friendships. It's about building a life that is safe, fulfilling, and connected.

Meet Eddie, one of the incredible people we support at Rehability UK.

Eddie is a talented clown, and he is devoted to his craft of making people laugh.

He shared a secret with us: once the costume and makeup are on, he feels a duty to bring joy, which helps him push past any grumpiness.

Eddie describes his experience of autism as “walking in a foreign country and you don't speak the language.”

Clowning helps bridge that gap. Because its humour is visual, it becomes a universal language that helps him connect with everyone around him, sharing joy without words.
