Have you heard of venous lakes before? 💭

Before & after: venous lake treatment at Midland Skin

What is a  ? 👇

A venous lake is a benign vascular lesion that typically appears as a small, dark blue to purple papule on the skin. They’re caused by dilated venules (small veins) and are most commonly found on sun-exposed areas… particularly areas like the lips, face, ears and neck.

What causes them?

There are a few causes and risk factors to note when it comes to venous lakes… my number one tip in preventing them being always using a broad spectrum SPF, seeking shade when the sun is at its strongest & investing in a wide brimmed hat; preventing the development of venous lakes by reducing sun damage to the skin

▪️ Sun exposure can cause venous lakes - chronic sun exposure increases your risk of developing them
▪️ Ageing is also a factor - these skin lesions are more common in older adults, likely due to cumulative sun damage and changes in skin elasticity
▪️ Genetics - some people may also have a genetic predisposition to developing venous lakes

How can we treat them?

Venous lakes are benign and asymptomatic, meaning that treatment is often not necessary unless they cause you cosmetic concerns or recurrent bleeding.

Laser Therapy is the treatment of choice and can resolve most venous lakes in one or two treatment.

As we draw towards the end of , did you know these interesting facts about hair? 👇

▪️The human scalp has 100,000 follicular units
▪️Each follicular unit has either one, two, three or four hairs growing from it. The average figure is 2-2.4
▪️Hair diameter and density declines with age.
▪️Normal hair density is 100 follicular units / cm2
▪️ Hair loss is only appreciable once at least half the hair in a particular area is lost
▪️ Hair follicles are constantly cycling and go through the following phases. At any one time, approximately 85% of hairs are in anagen, 2% in catagen and 13% in telogen

If you’re noticing shedding or thinning, early intervention leads to optimal outcomes. The sooner we are able to diagnose the underlying cause of your hair loss, the more we can do to prevent, treat and (in some cases) reverse it.

We understand how devastating suffering hair loss can be, and the huge impact it can have on sufferers’ on quality of life. We offer comprehensive support, and the following:

✔️ Hair loss consultations, where we provide constructive advice on your cause of hair loss and treatment options.
✔️ We offer a range of treatments including creams, lotions, tablets and injections; such as Steroid Injections and Oral Minoxidil.
✔️ Newly licensed medications are also available such as JAK inhibitors
✔️ Regenerative treatments including platelet rich plasma injections

August is  … and the conversation continues in September as we enter

Hair loss in women is 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐲 common… but it 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙡𝙨𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙚𝙙, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚𝙙 🙏

At Midland Skin, hair loss is treated medically and holistically: careful diagnosis, clear advice and a treatment plan tailored to you.

Our team specialises in contemporary management of male and female pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata and scarring alopecias using prescription treatments and regenerative therapies.

When it comes to hair loss, early intervention leads to optimal outcomes. The sooner we are able to diagnose the underlying cause of your hair loss, the more we can do to prevent, treat and (in some cases) reverse it.

The most common causes of hair loss include:

▪️ Male pattern hair loss
▪️ Female pattern hair loss
▪️ Acute telogen effluvium
▪️ Chronic telogen effluvium
▪️ Drug induced
▪️ Alopecia areata
▪️ Traction and chemical alopecia
▪️ Skin disorders causing inflammation on the scalp

Treatment options can include:

✅ Minoxidil. This lotion or foam can be obtained at any pharmacy and has been shown to slow down the process of female pattern hair loss in about 40% of users. Minoxidil needs to be continued indefinitely for the effect to be maintained.
✅ Oral minoxidil is a highly effective option we specialise in at Midland Skin for female pattern hair loss
✅ Spironolactone is also another medical solution for hair loss that we offer in clinic

Skin changes are common during perimenopause and menopause.

Falling levels of oestradiol can lead to thinner, less supple skin, along with dryness and fine lines. While these changes may prompt a refresh of your skincare routine, one thing that should always stay the same is sun protection.

From skipping SPF application on cloudy days, to forgetting to reapply throughout the day, these are some of the most common sun-skincare mistakes you could be making according to consultant dermatologist .rajpar_dermatologist

Why does acne cause hyperpigmentation, and what can this look like? 🤔💭👇

Acne is one of the most common causes of hyperpigmentation.

When an acne spot develops, there is inflammation in the skin. Inflammation causes skin cells to produce more melanin in certain individuals. This means that red acne lesions can leave behind dark spots or patches when they heal 🔴

Inflammation can also cause melanin to leak from the top layers of the skin (epidermis) to the deeper layers of the skin (dermis), where pigmentation is not usually found. This means acne causes more pigment molecules and pushes them deeper into the skin.

When pigmentation occurs following any sort of inflammation, including acne, it is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

More on that👇

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) - a term which refers to the stubborn brown or grey patches we often notice post-acne, affects up to 2 in 3 people with darker skin tones and can linger for months… or even years

A few of our top tips in effectively treating it include:

✅ Addressing the root cause: early and tailored management of your acne using prescription products and/or laser therapies

✅ No picking allowed: hands-off! Picking at and squeezing your acne can cause deeper inflammation and worsen pigmentation

✅ Dual-action topicals: retinoids (like tretinoin) and azelaic acid calm inflammation, reduce pigment production and promote healthy exfoliation

✅ Sun protection is essential: SPF 50+ every 2 hrs and hats prevent pigment from darkening further

✅ Advanced in-clinic treatments: chemical peels, pigmentation-targeted lasers, Halo laser resurfacing and other treatments can help treat more persistent spots

✅ Choosing Midland Skin ensures you’re in the care of experienced consultant dermatologists, who can work with you to create create a fully tailored treatment plan - from home-care to in-clinic procedures

Your journey to clearer, more even-toned skin starts with expert guidance and a comprehensive approach. Ready to fade those marks for good? 👨🏻‍⚕️👇

Industry-leading acne treatment and care in the Midlands ⚡️👨🏻‍⚕️👏

Acne is a common yet complex condition.

Our medical team at Midland Skin have extensive experience in treating acne - including hormonal acne, resistant acne, complex acne, maskne, acne that recurs following Isotretinoin courses and acne that is mild but chronic… and often difficult to control.

We also offer treatments for acne scarring, acne which leaves persistent red marks and acne which leaves persistent blemishes.

Your journey with us begin with an Acne Consultation with a Consultant Dermatologist.

Once you have had your first consultation, an individual treatment plan will be provided to you. This will include treatment options that are best suited to your individual type of acne. For some this may involve only a topical skin care product, usually prescription based. For others, alternative treatments may be required.

Further treatments may be added at regular follow-up consultations to get the best possible outcomes.

An assessment of your skin will also help establish if you have folliculitis, fungal acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis or other overlapping diagnoses that may require a separate line of treatment.
