🍁 - What to Do If Someone Is Choking
Please familiarise yourselves with the steps to follow if a client begins to choke:
🟡 1. Ask if they can cough or speak
If they can cough, encourage them to keep coughing.
🔴 2. If they cannot cough, breathe, or speak
➡️ Give up to 5 back blows
* Stand behind and to the side
* Support their chest
* Deliver firm blows between the shoulder blades
➡️ If ineffective, give up to 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich manoeuvre)
* Stand behind
* Place a fist above the belly button
* Pull inwards and upwards sharply
🔁 Alternate 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts until the blockage is cleared or help arrives
📞 Call 999 immediately if the person becomes unconscious or the obstruction does not clear.
Start CPR if they become unresponsive and not breathing normally.
