Interesting case in this mornings clinic !!!

Px in her 30’s with history of middle ear infections has come in with aural fullness and a reduction of hearing in her left ear.

The right ear has been aided with Starkey Genesis Ai. ITE hearing aid by us several months ago.

Tympanometry presents with a type B non compliant eardrum. This essentially means the eardrum is not vibrating to sound stimuli.

We have been able to rule out a perforation although on first presentation it does look like a perf. The correct diagnostic tests however suggest it has healed.

The next issue is what could potentially be causing the eardrum to be non compliant?

In this case we can see that the eardrum is being impeded by dead skin (keratosis) which has not migrated away from the eardrum which it should naturally do. This skin has now adhered and harderned over the eardrum.

We are always quick to refer to ENT with these cases to rule out cholesteotoma or other significant middle ear pathologies.

This is why it is important to keep the health of your ears in the hand of audiologists who have years of experience of looking at ears and making accurate diagnosis.
