Stress can give us a short term hormone boost of cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline - essential to tackle a threat, provide the motivation and focus to complete a difficult task, solve a problem or reach a short term goal. In small doses, stress is good for us.
But…..Ongoing, long term (chronic) stress, can cause physical and mental harm. Our immune system can be affected, making us more susceptible to colds, flu and other infections. Our liver gives us a boost of glucose when we are stressed, but long term stress increases our risk of developing type 2 diabetes and increased cortisol levels stop our bodies from breaking down fat. Our guts respond to stress with pain, bloating or IBS. Our skin responds to stress, with inflammation and worsening of skin conditions such as acne, eczema or psoriasis. Stress hormones can cause changes in the blood vessels around the brain causing tension headaches and migraines. Stress can impact reproductive cycles, disrupt periods and even fertility. It is well documented that long term stress can contribute to the likelihood of heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure and stroke.
Chronic stress is incredibly closely linked to our risk of serious mental health conditions by affecting our dopamine levels. Chronic stress, anxiety and depression are all closely linked.
If you are struggling with stress or concerned about your stress levels and the impact on your health, it’s always OK to ask for help.
