There is a chance this will be a rant …
How on earth did we as a society allow the phrase ‘I am just a carer’ to even be a thing?
I hear it too often and not just at work, today in a random car park as it so happens, paid or unpaid care givers are probably the strongest people on the earth - emotionally, mentally and what about their resilience … does it count for nothing?
It’s bad enough that they are in one of the lowest paid categories of worker but to let people almost be ashamed to say they are a carer makes me sick 🤢
Looking after a relative or loved one is one matter which shouldn’t be overlooked but some of our carers are clinically trained - they KEEP PEOPLE ALIVE !!! Adults and children while they are in their care …
Mental Health and Learning Disability carers are at risk of being attacked, abused, hit, kicked, spat on yet they still go to work every day 😩
Complex Health Carers are at risk of seeing some pass away, respiratory arrest, watch a seizure etc and yet they still go to work every day 😱
I think it says more about the people that look down on them because I can bet they wouldn’t even last an hour never mind a life time to be honest 🕰️
Maybe next time someone informs you they are ‘just a carer’ try a response like ‘WOW’ or ‘thank you’ or ‘brilliant. I couldn’t do it’ rather than feed in to it with a sympathetic look or a passive comment … it’s really really hard and I for one am proud to be in this extraordinary industry and know some amazing human beings who chose to go in to care, because they care and want to make a difference, let’s face it it ain’t for the money is it …
