“I know I’m horrendously lucky to have it.”

This is Liz giving a big smile during her monthly infusion of plasma medicine. 😊

Every month the 77-year-old visits Guy’s Hospital in London to receive immunoglobulin. This helps strengthen her immune system following treatment for a rare blood cancer called Waldenström’s Macroglobulinemia.

Liz is one of the 2,000+ people to have received immunoglobulin made from UK blood and plasma donations since March - when patients started to get this treatment.

She makes the most of the regular hospital trips, joking: “I get the train and arrive early because the canteen has fantastic hot sausage rolls and hot chocolate. Then on the way back I stock up at Marks & Spencer!” 🛍️

Once a blood donor, Liz is extremely grateful to everyone who donates to help her stay well.

“People don’t always know what plasma is or how it helps,” she says.

“It keeps me going - and I’m so grateful.” 💙

It's Stem Cell Awareness Day and you could be someone's hero without knowing it yet 💚

Some people need stem cell transplants to help them get better, and you might be their perfect match. The wonderful thing is, it's so much simpler than you'd think to help.

When you next go to give blood, take just a moment to ask about becoming a stem cell donor too. It's just a quick chat that could make all the difference to someone's life.

Andrew recently gave his 7th donation of O negative blood in memory of his son, Rycroft, who sadly passed away in 2023 at just 16 months old.

Rycroft’s short life was extended thanks to the generosity of a stem cell donor, a gift that gave his family more precious time with him.

You can watch and share Rycroft’s story here ➡️ https://ow.ly/4cPo50X73KE 💚🩸

This Grandparents Day, we're celebrating Judy - an incredible O- donor who's inspired three generations of her family to give blood ❤️

Judy's passion for helping others has rubbed off on her daughter Caroline and granddaughters Mollie and Emelia, and between them, they’ve now donated 153 times!

From grandmother to granddaughters, this amazing family is helping save lives together. Now that's a legacy to be proud of!

Happy Grandparents Day to all the grandparents who inspire the next generation to make a difference.

Meet Margaret, a visiting student nurse from University College Birmingham who recently joined one of our teams on placement.

Through her time shadowing specialist nurses on wards, she gained first-hand experience with blood and exchange transfusions for sickle cell patients. Seeing the scale of the need, with up to 8 -10 units of blood required for a single patient, inspired her to become a blood donor herself. 💉

Now, Margaret hopes to encourage her friends, family, and community to support sickle cell awareness and the importance of blood donation.

Following on from Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and as we mark the start of Black History Month, we’re reminded of the vital role blood donation plays in supporting patients with sickle cell, the fastest growing genetic condition in the UK, which most commonly affects people of Black heritage.

Thank you to everyone who supported Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Together, we can keep raising awareness and making a difference . ❤️

Arthur Spencer, 87, from Biggleswade, has been donating blood for 68 years, and last week he reached an incredible 150 donations. 🩸👏

Arthur first rolled up his sleeve at 19, inspired by his aunt and a drama student friend. Even during his RAF service, he kept donating – helped along by a 'bonus' of a bottle of stout beer afterwards!

What keeps him going nearly seven decades later?

He said: "We donors are not looking for financial incentives - we donate blood because we can and because there’s a need.

“I don’t know how many people get to 150. I’m proud of donating and my wife’s proud of it. That’s the main thing – that she’s proud of it.

“They used to advise you if it had been used in a heart operation or a lung operation, and I found that marvellous. Now they tell you which hospital it has been issued to instead. It makes everything worthwhile."

We are so grateful to donors like Arthur who help ensure that the blood is available when patients and hospitals urgently need it. ❤️

Not 1, not 2, but 3 REASONS for Mark to celebrate! 🙌

This week, Mark Randall donated plasma in Birmingham for the 40th time – his 100th donation altogether (after adding in previous blood donations).

Incredibly, he hit these milestones on his birthday. 🎂

What a legend!!

"I’m Aliya, I have sickle cell anaemia Hbss. Before I began transfusions I was in hospital constantly due to sickle cell crisis. Being in hospital so frequently deeply impacted my mental and emotional health. I wasn’t able to live life like my peers.

"For the past 9 years I have had 8 units of blood every 6 weeks, you can only imagine how much blood I’ve received.

"I have to thank the real life superheroes who donate blood allowing people like myself to live a more fulfilling life by alleviating symptoms, and painful crises.

"Blood transfusions allow me some normality in my day to day life. It’s such a selfless act that is truly appreciated by myself and others."

It’s Sickle Cell Awareness Month 🩸

Sickle cell is a painful genetic blood disorder that mostly affects people of Black heritage.

Every day, people living with sickle cell rely on blood transfusions to stay alive. For many, regular transfusions every 4 to 6 weeks, or monthly red cell exchanges, are the only way to manage symptoms.

For the safest treatment, patients need blood that’s very closely matched - often from a donor of the same ethnicity.
