Last week we became the first private hospital outside of London to offer Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) using Medtronic's innovative PFA system. Dr Mauro Lencioni and Dr Howard Marshall, Consultant Cardiologists, alongside Dr David Green, Consultant Anaesthetist, performed the first case here at The Harborne Hospital to treat a patient with persistent atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation is a type of arrhythmia that makes your heartbeat in an irregular way. It can cause symptoms of palpitations, dizziness and increases your risk of stroke.

Traditionally, ablation has been done using thermal energy; instead, PFA uses high voltage electrical pulses to create tiny scars that restore and maintain a regular heartbeat. PFA can offer:

- Shorter procedure times
- Reduced potential for complications
- Faster recovery times

Having a range of options to be able to offer patients the best treatment for their individual needs is incredibly important. A huge thank you to Medtronic and the hospital team for their support and expertise.

🧡 This Myeloma Awareness Week, Dr Prem Mahendra, leading blood cancer expert at The Harborne Hospital, explains how innovative bispecific antibodies can harness your immune system to target cancer, giving new treatment options to people living with Myeloma.

This groundbreaking treatment works by directly targeting both T cells and myeloma cells simultaneously. Bispecific antibodies act as "T cell engagers" - creating a bridge that connects your own T cells directly to myeloma cells so your immune system can recognise and destroy them. With impressive response rates of 60-70%, this targeted immunotherapy is proving to be a game changer for patients who haven't responded to other treatments.

As we approach the end of Skin Cancer Awareness Month we caught up with Dr Ajoy Bardhan, Consultant Dermatologist, to share expert yet simple advice on how to protect your skin and stay safe in the sun.

“Reducing your risk of skin cancer is simple but essential: it is important to check your moles regularly and to practise sun safety every day,” says Dr Bardhan. “Some top tips include using broad-spectrum SPF 30+, even on cloudy days. If you're spending time outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours and don’t forget to wear protective clothing, a hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Most importantly, check your skin monthly for any new, changing moles or non-healing lesions.”

If you've noticed any changes to your skin or are concerned about a mole you can book an appointment with Dr Bardhan: https://www.hcahealthcare.co.uk/finder/stepconsultantprofile/ajoy-bardhan

We have now launched heart health checks at The Harborne Hospital!

“I cannot stress enough the importance of regular heart health checks. Heart disease often develops silently, without obvious symptoms, until a major event like a heart attack or stroke occurs. By monitoring key indicators such as blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and heart rhythm, we can identify risks early and take proactive steps to prevent serious complications. The sooner we detect a problem, the more options we have to treat it - giving you the best chance at a healthier life.” Dr Sudhakar George, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist.

If you're interested in understanding your personal heart health and how you can lower your potential risk, you can learn more here https://www.hcahealthcare.co.uk/services/departments/cardiac-care/heart-health-check-birmingham

We stopped by the Endoscopy department and spoke to Richard Fidoe, Endoscopy Lead, here at The Harborne Hospital, to find out more about how endoscopy can help diagnose bowel cancer.

"Endoscopy plays a vital role in diagnosing bowel cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage. Through a procedure called a colonoscopy, we can look for any precancerous growths called polyps, or any other abnormalities to your bowel, identifying and treating any issues before they develop further. If you’re experiencing any bowel related symptoms, then a colonoscopy allows us to take a closer look at what may be causing them."

Who should have a colonoscopy?
✔️If you're over 45 (or younger with a family history of bowel cancer), then a colonoscopy can be used to screen for any irregularities.
✔️If you have persistent bowel changes, blood in your stool, or unexplained weight loss, then a colonoscopy can help us to identify what is causing these symptoms.

“For Julia, acting quickly was critically important. The MRI scan showed that the tumour was very close to key liver structures. If it had grown further, it could have penetrated or encircled these structures, requiring a much more complex, riskier procedure. In the worst case, her cancer may have become inoperable.” - Mr Nikolaos Chatzizacharias, Consultant HPB Surgeon at The Harborne Hospital.

When Julia was diagnosed with secondary liver cancer she was faced with a 13 week wait for surgery. Knowing she needed to act quickly Julia decided to transfer her care to The Harborne Hospital, where specialists Mr Nikolaos Chatzizacharias and Dr Mohammed Arshad, along with the theatre team carried out surgery.

Julia’s operation was a success, the cancer was completely removed and, after a short stay in ITU, both Julia and her liver have made a full recovery.
