💕 We've lit up the hospital in pink to mark breast cancer awareness month.

October is an important time to raise awareness of breast cancer and its symptoms. It’s the most common cancer in the UK and we know that early diagnosis can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

Anyone can get breast cancer so it’s important to check your breasts regularly. This includes checking your armpits too and your chest all the way up to your collar bone.

Things to look out for include:

• A lump in your breast, chest or armpit
• Changes to the colour or texture of the skin on your breast
• Changes to your ni**le, it may appear inverted, or pulled in
• Discharge from your ni**le
• Changes to the shape or size of one or both of your breasts
• Persistent breast pain

If you’ve noticed any changes to your breasts see your GP or a breast specialist without delay.

This Back Care Awareness Week, we wanted to share more about the hidden culprit behind 30% of back pain.

Did you know that in up to 30% of cases of lower back pain it is actually the sacroiliac joint that is to blame? It’s often misdiagnosed. That means many patients may be left struggling with the wrong treatment, and the right diagnosis could have sped up their recovery.

Mr Andraay Leung, Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at The Harborne Hospital, explains why sacroiliac joint pain is so tricky to spot. From pregnancy-related changes to degenerative wear and tear, this joint can cause pain that mimics other back problems - making accurate referral pathways absolutely vital.

Getting the diagnosis right doesn’t just ease pain but it can transform lives.

🔍 Lymphoma: This blood cancer awareness month we're raising awareness of the different types of blood cancer. We spoke to specialist Dr Salim Shafeek about Lymphoma and the common signs to look out for.

"Lymphoma is the most common type of blood cancer. It affects white blood cells known as lymphocytes, which play an important role in the immune system.

There are two main types of lymphoma known as Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and Hodgkin Lymphoma. Both present with similar symptoms including painless lumps most commonly in the neck, collarbone, armpit or groin. Other symptoms include frequent recurring infections, fever, sudden or unexplained weight loss or night sweats also known as night drenching – which soak your clothes and bedding.

Treatment outcomes depend on the type and stage of lymphoma you are diagnosed with. But finding lymphoma early can significantly increase the chance of successful treatment outcomes. At The Harborne Hospital we offer fast diagnostic tests and biopsies to help detect lymphoma quickly.

If you are experiencing any new and persistent symptoms make sure you see your GP or a specialist without delay.”

🔍 Leukaemia: This blood cancer awareness month we're raising awareness of the different types of blood cancer. We spoke to specialist Dr Paul Ferguson about Leukaemia and the common signs to look out for.

“Leukaemia is a type of blood cancer that affects the cells in your bone marrow, a spongy tissue inside some of your bones, your bone marrow is also responsible for your blood cell production.

There are different types of leukaemia, these are characterised by which blood cell is affected and how the cancer develops. Some leukaemia’s are chronic (slow growing) and some are acute (fast growing).

Symptoms largely depend on the type of leukaemia but there are some common symptoms to be aware of. These include extreme tiredness known as fatigue, recurrent and persistent infections, unexplained bruising or bleeding, swollen lymph glands or unexplained weight loss. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it’s important to see your GP without delay as leukaemia, particularly acute leukaemia, requires urgent medical intervention.”

♥️ September is blood cancer awareness month. Blood cancers are the fifth most common cancer in the UK but despite this awareness remains low. Over the coming days we’ll be raising awareness of some of the common symptoms and the expertise of the doctors who are at the forefront of advancing treatments and transforming outcomes.

Today we’re starting with Multiple Myeloma and Professor Guy Pratt, Consultant Haematologist.

"Multiple myeloma, often referred to as myeloma, is an incurable but highly treatable type of blood cancer. Thanks to advancements in medicine people with myeloma are living for longer than ever before. The majority of patients will benefit from various different treatment options over a number of years.

The key symptoms to look out for are bone pain, fractures or breaks, most commonly in the back, shoulder or ribs. Extreme tiredness, shortness of breath, weakness, or recurrent infections are all symptoms that need to be investigated. Experiencing these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have myeloma but finding it early can improve treatment outcomes."

"It's the best treatment I've been on in 25 years, and it's been doing a really good job - I've been in remission for 18 months now. After all the harsh treatments over the years, I'm living better with this illness than I ever have."- Sharon

When Sharon broke a rib in June 1999, she never imagined it would lead to a life-changing diagnosis of multiple myeloma, an incurable but treatable type of blood cancer.

After 25 years of chemotherapy, multiple relapses, and challenging treatments, Sharon's story has taken a remarkable turn. Thanks to groundbreaking bispecific antibody therapy Teclistamab under the expert care of Dr Prem Mahendra here at The Harborne Hospital, Sharon is experiencing what she describes as ‘the best quality of life I’ve had in decades.’

This revolutionary immunotherapy works like a bridge, connecting Sharon's own immune cells directly to the cancer cells, activating them to destroy the disease with far fewer side effects than traditional treatments.

Her experience demonstrates how innovative treatments are transforming outcomes for myeloma patients, offering renewed hope even after years of challenging therapies.

🧡 This Myeloma Awareness Week, Dr Prem Mahendra, leading blood cancer expert at The Harborne Hospital, explains how innovative bispecific antibodies can harness your immune system to target cancer, giving new treatment options to people living with Myeloma.

This groundbreaking treatment works by directly targeting both T cells and myeloma cells simultaneously. Bispecific antibodies act as "T cell engagers" - creating a bridge that connects your own T cells directly to myeloma cells so your immune system can recognise and destroy them. With impressive response rates of 60-70%, this targeted immunotherapy is proving to be a game changer for patients who haven't responded to other treatments.
