More acupuncture = better for depression

Acupuncture has dose-dependent effects on the symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD), concludes a systematic review by Chinese authors. Sixty-two studies involving 2269 MDD patients provided data for meta-analysis. The results showed that an increase in the number of acupuncture sessions received was associated with increasing symptom improvement in MDD patients. After eight acupuncture sessions, depression scores decreased from 17.68 to 8.30. After 24 acupuncture sessions, a decrease in depression scores was observed in 51% of cases. After 36 acupuncture sessions, improvement in depression scores peaked, with 66% of cases showing significant improvement.

For those of you who come for acupuncture already with me you know that treatment often includes the use of moxa. And moxa is mugwort farmed and dried, usually in China, Japan or Korea. This article outlines other uses for mugwort but in acupuncture it is used as a herb to warm up acupuncture points. It’s a non invasive, gentle, tonnifying technique that Suits almost all clients whatever their age. Because it doesn’t involve inserting a needle it is particularly useful for needle phobic adults or children and can be an adjunct to other techniques or a stand alone treatment in itself.
It’s such a useful technique and used so regularly in Japan and China that the Chinese translation of acupuncturist is ‘ acupuncturist moxabustionist’. Far too much of a mouthful for us speaking English!

With notes of rosemary and sage, the aromatic flowering plant lends its subtle flavours to baking, roasting and even a bit of seasonal winemaking

If you’d like to discuss how acupuncture could help you please get in touch.

A healthy sleep pattern and lifestyle may be beneficial for the optimal primary prevention of hypertension, study finds.

A testimonial I received recently sums up the power of acupuncture to help with the physical and emotional trauma left by life saving surgery. As I personally know Western medicine and Acupuncture work together to extend and improve lives.

“I first went to Gaynor for acupuncture following major surgery.
Although my external scars had healed well, I was left with a lot of internal scar tissue and nerve damage. This was causing a lot of tightness and discomfort in my neck, and around my mouth. Although I am enormously grateful for the surgery, I was feeling very tense and miserable, and this was having a negative effect on my life
The acupuncture has really freed up the tension in my neck, very much reducing the discomfort and improving my posture. This has hugely boosted my mental well-being, and I feel much happier and lighter of spirit.
As part of my treatment, I am also having energy work from Gaynor, and this is is making a big difference to the feel of the swelling around my mouth. I can see a subtle difference in the appearance of the surgery area, and the area is less painful.
Gaynor is non-judgemental, intuitive and supportive. She careful tailors each session to address acute problems, but also to support the patient’s own physical, mental and emotional healing. I very much recommend her practice if you are considering acupuncture or energy healing work.
