Birmingham Hospice is the primary provider of adult hospice care in Birmingham. We deliver expert palliative and end of life care to local people living with a terminal diagnosis - at our hospice sites, in the community and in patients' own homes. We are committed to improving the quality of life for people living with life-limiting illnesses, as well as supporting their families and loved ones. We believe that anyone with a terminal diagnosis deserves to live well and make the very most of the time that remains. We care for around 670 patients on average every day across our services. Our mission is, and always will be, to help people from all communities access the care of their choice at the end of life. We are not fully funded by the NHS or government, and we expect it to cost around £19 million to run our services this year; 42% of this must be covered through voluntary income such as fundraising activity, income from our shops and voluntary donations.

Birmingham Hospice’s dedicated care and support extends to loved ones and family as well as our patients. Terry from Shard End says he’ll always be grateful for the kindness and compassion the team has shown him and the family while his wife Linda, who he calls Twiggy or Twig, is receiving care in the hospice’s Inpatient Unit (IPU).

Linda was diagnosed with lung cancer and emphysema just over two years ago after falling ill suddenly on New Year’s Eve. For much of that time, she’s been able to remain independent with Community District Nurses visiting regularly. But a fortnight ago she became very poorly and is now being made as comfortable as possible in the IPU.

Terry has been able to stay by Linda’s side almost every night.

“The nurses have all been fantastic and have bent over backwards to help us especially when I’ve stayed over. They brought me a bed and are feeding me. The chef said to me: 'What about dinner? Not for Linda, for you.’

“We didn’t know anything about hospices, we never had to use one. Everyone is very, very nice. Once or twice I’ve got quite upset and they’ve been very understanding.

“There’s 46 of us in our family altogether including sons, daughters, grand-children and great grand-children and we can visit any time of day or night.”

Terry and Linda have been married for many years after meeting on a blind date and it’s important to Terry that Linda’s being looked after so well at such a difficult time.

“I’m just glad Twiggy is in a hospice and not a hospital. They’ve been really good at keeping her comfortable. She’s not in pain. And all the staff have got lots of time for us.”

Gary and friends took on Ride the Reservoir last year in memory of their childhood friend Neil, who had been cared for by Birmingham Hospice months before.

Gary said: “The nurses were incredible, and the facilities were amazing, it was just a lovely place to be given the hugely difficult circumstances.”

The Ride the Reservoir route took them past pubs of their youth, and the team raised an incredible £5,000!

“The route was fabulous, with minimal traffic, making it feel both safe and scenic. The little touches, like the well-placed refreshment stops, made a big difference. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.”

Could you take on Ride the Reservoir on 26th April so Birmingham Hospice can support more people like Neil?

Dedicated supporter Becky is taking on the TCS London Marathon for Birmingham Hospice, after her stepdad and grandad both received our care. 🤍

In 2018, grandad Mike was diagnosed with cancer that left him bedbound, with Becky’s nan, brother and mum caring for him at home. Months later, Mike went into our Inpatient Unit (IPU) after his condition worsened, requiring constant care.

Becky travelled from London to be there in Mike’s final moments. She said the team were “absolutely fantastic, the way they set Grandad up and let people come and visit him as they needed. One of the things my nan really valued was being able to just be there with him”. She remembers how “they never made us feel rushed – it doesn’t feel like a clinical setting”.

The following year, Becky’s stepdad Steve was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer.
She recalls: “Straight away, there was no question that we should contact Birmingham Hospice because of how amazing they were before.”

As well as providing at-home care, the hospice organised Becky’s parents’ wedding after 26 years together, bringing balloons and presents to create special family memories. He sadly died the next day.

Becky has supported the hospice ever since. “It’s important for me to give back to the hospice, which has done so much for our family”, she told us.

In the marathon, Becky is most looking forward to “the atmosphere of London, and seeing a different perspective of the city I’ve lived in for 15 years – the training is hard, but people say the marathon is the reward”.

Today, we would like to say a huge thank you to our friends at the Loyal Caledonian Cork’s Club, who chose Birmingham Hospice as their charity of the year for the second year running, and recently presented our Fundraising Team with a cheque for £10,400! 🩷

This phenomenal amount was raised through various activities including car washes, skittles evenings and the sale of football cards. They have also let us use the venue for our own events, including as a drop off site for our Treecycling campaign in January.

The club have raised over £20,000 for us over the last two years - thank you so much to all of the staff and members at the club for their incredible support!
