Giant hogweed (aka giant cow parsley) is a fairly common plant in the UK, we are seeing it everywhere at the moment, but did you know it is a toxic plant that can cause severe skin blisters*, burns and even blindness?

Toxic components in the leaves, stems, roots, flowers and seeds can be transferred to the skin by touch, and although these do not cause burning alone, they make skin sensitive to sunlight, which can then cause rashes, burns and severe blistering. How badly the skin is affected depends on the individual, but children are known to be particularly sensitive.

NHS guidance is to wash the area of skin with soap and water as quickly as possible and keep it covered.

If a burn appears, treat it as you usually would a burn:

🛑Stop the burn process as soon as possible.
🆒Cool the skin with cool running water for 20 minutes
✋🏻Cover the burn with cling film.
💊Treat the pain from a burn with paracetamol or ibuprofen.
🙋🏻Raise the affected area, if possible, to help to reduce swelling.

Please see your GP or call 111 if symptoms are severe or persistent.

*Please note, we have not been able to source an image of how skin blisters due to hogweed would look on black or brown skin - if this has happened to you and you would like to share the image to help others understand how this presents, please DM us 💚

One in 20 children will have a febrile seizure, yet many parents have never heard of them and they can be pretty scary to experience. In this week's episode of the Family Health podcast, we’re back chatting with NHS paediatrician Dr Lillie Parker to bust common myths, talk through what happens in A&E, and share practical tips about febrile seizures and temperatures that every parent or carer should know, including when to call for help, and why a thermometer is one of the most important tools in your family first aid kit!We can’t stop febrile seizures from happening but knowing what to do makes all the difference. ⚠️ Why are all of these foods potential choking hazards for babies and small children?

Size, shape and consistency!

Hard, round foods that do not dissolve in the mouth and cannot be chewed properly by babies or toddlers without molars are a risk for choking.

Foods like grapes and sausages that are round are the perfect shape for getting stuck in your baby's or child’s airway.

Food like sticky marshmallows, particularly when wet with saliva, can stick to your child’s throat and be very difficult to dislodge.

Lollipops on sticks might be fine to suck, but we know the lollipop itself can easily come off its stick and sucked into your toddlers throat.

Please take care to cut foods properly to make sure that even if they get stuck, they won’t completely block the airway. Cut grapes, tomatoes and hot dogs lengthways into long strips rather than round or in halves.

And why not come and learn how to deal with a choking incident at a Mini First Aid class so that if the worst does happen, you are fully prepared and ready to jump in and help your child. Find a class near you on our website. Classes are just two-hours long and jam-packed with life-saving information and skill-training 💚

🥵 Hot nights can make sleep uncomfortable for all of us, but for babies and toddlers, high heat at night can be dangerous.

❗️Babies and toddlers can overheat quickly. The risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is higher in babies who get too hot.

💚But there are lots of things you can do to help keep your child safe while sleeping during warm weather:

✅ Keep the room temperature between 16–20°C
✅ Use a fan to cool the room (but don’t point it directly at baby)
✅ Dress baby in a single layer, like a vest or nappy only
✅ Keep the curtains closed during the daytime so the room doesn’t heat up as much
✅ Avoid using loose blankets or bulky bedding

💚Remember: a cool baby is a safe baby.
