From years of helping OCD sufferers, I know how overwhelming and isolating OCD can feel. The constant, intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviours can make you feel like a prisoner in your own mind. I’ve gotta say, feeling like you’re all alone in this is common, but trust me, it couldn’t be further from the truth. One of my favourite research papers is “Love yourself as a person, doubt yourself as a therapist.” Published in 2015, the authors share what they discovered when they investigated the impact of therapist in-session behaviours on client outcomes. Interestingly, therapists who embrace self-doubt, practice self-compassion, and actively deal with clinical problems tend to be more effective.

You can do lots of seemingly odd behaviours like walking around in circles, checking things repeatedly, repeating phrases or counting until it feels right. These behaviours are called compulsions.
