Today we're saying a huge thank you to all of our Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) on . 🌟

AHPs are made up of 14 different professions and play a vital role in the care and recovery of patients.

They come from many different professional backgrounds, including dietitians, occupational therapists, operating department practitioners, orthotists, physiotherapists, radiographers, speech and language therapists, and more.

Together, they play a vital role in the care and recovery of our patients and are the third-largest staff group in the NHS. Today AHP'S from across UHB have joined together, to celebrate at a AHP showcase at Good Hope Hospital and last week AHP’s also gathered at a showcase at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Both included lectures, stands and celebrations of the important work they do across our hospitals.👏

𝐀 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 – 𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞.

As part of Baby Loss Awareness Week, families across Birmingham and Solihull are warmly invited to a special remembrance service titled A Time to Remember.

📅 Sunday 12 October
🕑 2:00 PM
📍 St Barnabas Church Centre, Erdington

This gentle and reflective service offers a safe space for anyone affected by baby loss to come together, honour the memory of their babies, and find comfort among others who understand. Whether your loss was recent or many years ago, all are welcome to attend and share in this moment of remembrance.

To mark the end of Baby Loss Awareness Week, families are also invited to take part in the Wave of Light on Tuesday 15 October, lighting a candle in remembrance. UHB Charity has created a special online dedication page, Wave of Light, where families light a candle to commemorate their babies who sadly died too soon.

By day, Robert MacDonald-Johns is a specialist physiotherapist building relationships with his patients, by night you can find him building LEGO.

As a specialist physiotherapist Robert supports adults with cystic fibrosis at Heartlands Hospital, a role he’s proudly held since 2012. From helping patients stay active to supporting them with clearing sticky sputum from their lungs, Robert plays a vital role in helping people live well with lifelong conditions.💙

Robert said: “We build long-term relationships with our patients. It’s not just clinical, we help them reach life goals like holidays, weddings, and staying active.”

But outside of work you’ll find Robert getting creative with bricks – LEGO bricks, that is.

On his hobby he added: “Like many, I loved LEGO as a child. “I stopped for a while, but when my kids started playing, I picked it up again. It’s such a great way to unwind, whether you’re creating something new or just following the instructions, it’s really relaxing.”

Robert now builds intricate models inspired by nostalgic TV and film favourites, including Scrubs, Thundercats, and Disney’s Robin Hood. He even exhibits his work at LEGO conventions across the country.

When he's not building or working supporting patients, Robert is kept busy on the family allotment or enjoying theme park days with his children. 🎢🌱

If you’re passionate about making a lasting difference in patient recovery, we would love to hear from you.

This month, as we celebrate East and South East Asian Heritage Month, we’re proud to share Bernard’s journey in our latest We Are UHB Blog.

From his early days as one of the first Filipino nurses to join Heartlands Hospital in 1999, to leading the Runcorn Road Renal Unit today. Bernard Barrios, Unit Manager and Senior Charge Nurse, shares how his father’s dialysis journey inspired his career, why kindness and compassion are at the heart of everything he does, and what it means to lead a team that feels like family.

🎉 1,000 newborn samples collected for The Generation Study at UHB!

Run by Genomics England, the three-year national study aims to screen a total of 100,000 newborns for over 200+ genetic conditions, helping to support earlier detection and improve care.

To celebrate this recruitment milestone, our research colleagues visited the delivery suite at Heartlands Hospital to thank the clinical team for all their hard work so far.

Laura Thrasyvoulou, Senior Paediatric and Midwifery Research Nurse, said:

“We would like to take the time to thank every member of the clinical team who have contributed towards the collection of The Generation Study samples. We appreciate this is an extra task in your already busy environment. Your work to collect samples is contributing to the improvement of the lives of future generations. Keep up the good work!”

Social media star, Ben Newman or ‘Spud Man’ as he is known online, put his spuds aside to meet patients at the Runcorn Road Dialysis Unit roadshow.

Spud Man , who has gained a worldwide following by sharing his life running a jacket potato trailer in Tamworth, shared his positive outlook to living with kidney failure and receiving dialysis. “I dialyse at home and even while on holiday - it’s never held me back from what I've accomplished. People often ask me questions and I think they appreciate a positive attitude to living with kidney problems" he said.

The event also gave patients the chance to meet others with kidney conditions and get advice from the nursing team on home treatments.
