๐ŸŒฟ Welcome to the first babies born on the Willow Midwife led unit at Heartlands Hospital. ๐ŸŒฟ

We are delighted to celebrate the arrival of the very first babies born on our Willow Midwife led unit, which has reopened after five years - a truly special milestone for Heartlands Hospital. ๐Ÿ’›

The Willow Midwife led unit is the recommended place of birth for all healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies, offering a calm and supportive โ€œhome from homeโ€ environment. Here, our midwives recognise that birth is an everyday miracle, and that every birth experience is unique.

Our midwives work in close partnership with women to provide holistic, individualised care, supporting their needs and wishes while respecting culture, background and religious beliefs.

The Willow unit has been carefully designed to feel welcoming, supportive and caring, helping women and their families feel safe, confident and supported throughout their birth experience.

Congratulations to our first families, and heartfelt thanks to our incredible midwives who made these first births so special. ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ‘ถ

The Willow Midwife led unit is now open and we couldnโ€™t be prouder.

Weโ€™re looking forward to welcoming even more women to Willow as they begin their journey to meet their babies.

"I fell into nursing. But from my very first placement, I completely fell in love with it. I just knew I was exactly where I was supposed to be. If I won the lottery tomorrow, I would still do this job for free. I genuinely adore it and the difference it makesโ€

With nearly 20 years in nursing, Sineadโ€™s journey has taken her from a band 2 role to leading endoscopy services across multiple sites. As Lead Nurse for Endoscopy and Lead Advanced Nurse Endoscopist her role now spans both clinical expertise and leadership, supporting teams while delivering diagnostic and therapeutic procedures that can detect serious conditions earlier.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, and the work of endoscopy Bowel Cancer Screening teams play a vital role in detecting issues earlier and improving outcomes for patients across our communities.

In our latest โ€˜We are UHBโ€™ blog, Sinead shares why it always comes back to people, the support and that shared purpose is what has kept her at UHB.

Dr Mahwash Yousaf, Consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia, has been recognised as our 1,000th GMC-accredited consultant supervisor, marking a significant milestone in UHBโ€™s commitment to medical education and training.๐Ÿ‘

Clinical and Educational supervisors play a vital role in supporting resident doctors throughout their training. As educational supervisors, they guide trainees in achieving key clinical competencies, provide structured feedback, and act as a consistent source of mentorship and support.

Dr Yousaf, who works across Heartlands and Solihull Hospitals, said: โ€œFor me, it is about being able to give something back. It is almost part of the circle of life. I have always had a passion for teaching and enjoy every opportunity I have to pass on my knowledge to resident doctors.

โ€œIt is really important to me that we offer that support both from a training point of view and from a wellbeing perspective for our future workforce. There have been many supervisors before me, and there will be many after me, but Iโ€™m proud to be the 1,000th.โ€

On the appointment, Dr Susan Dorrian, Deputy Medical Director (Education) and Emergency Medicine Consultant, said: โ€œDr Yousafโ€™s appointment not only recognises her personal commitment to developing others, but also reflects the vital role our supervisors play in supporting colleagues to become the best clinicians they can be. Reaching 1,000 accredited supervisors is something we should all feel proud of.โ€

After an incredible 41 and a half years of service, Marie Oley, Subject Access Manager, has officially retired, marking a truly remarkable career at Heartlands Hospital๐Ÿ’™

Marie began her journey in September 1984 as a secretary to the Nursing Director, before moving on to support the Chief Executive. After maternity leave, she joined the Medical Records Team (now Subject Access) as a PA and office manager, steadily progressing to become Subject Access Manager. She's carried out this role with dedication and pride ever since.

Over the years Marie has experienced the highs and challenges of working in healthcare: "We've had laughter and tears, and I've made so many friends along the way. Subject Access can be challenging, but it's rewarding. You almost have to be a detective, and it's lovely knowing you've helped patients and their families."

As she begins her next chapter, Marie is looking forward to exciting plans, including a move to Worcester, and preparing for her wedding next year ๐Ÿ’

After more than four decades of service, Marie leaves an incredible legacy and will be hugely missed. Wishing you a happy and well-deserved retirement Marieโœจ

We are wishing a happy Easter to those celebrating across Birmingham and Solihull.

Easter is a sacred time in the Christian calendar, a season of reflection, renewal and hope. Christians observe Holy Week, reflecting on the events leading up to the first Easter - Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday.

Easter Sunday is a major celebration for Christians, as it marks Jesusโ€™s resurrection, bringing hope and new life. For some Christians from Eastern Orthodox and Coptic traditions who follow the Julian calendar, Easter will be celebrated later in April.

A big thank you to our colleagues, who are working across our hospitals and community services over the bank holiday weekend.

Even while working hard on our Urgent Care Centre project, MTX took the time to bring smiles to our patients and we couldnโ€™t be more grateful.

Thank you for helping make this Easter egg-straordinary! ๐Ÿ’›

If you need medical help over the long weekend, using the right service can save you time and ensure you get the best care. Hereโ€™s how to stay well and get support if you need it:

โœ… Visit your local pharmacy โ€“ Many are open all weekend and can help with minor illnesses like coughs, colds, sore throats, UTIs, sinus infections, and skin conditions. Check which pharmacies are open near you via the link in the comments.
โœ… Use NHS 111 โ€“ Available 24/7 online or by phone for urgent advice, and to be directed to the right service, including urgent treatment centres and out-of-hours GPs.
โœ… Only use A&E for life-threatening emergencies.
