Acne Triggers: What They Are and How to Avoid Them 🌟

Acne can be frustrating, but understanding its triggers can help you keep your skin clear and healthy. Here are some common culprits:

Unhealthy Foods:
Eating foods high in sugar and fat can lead to breakouts. Opt for a balanced diet to keep your skin glowing.

Touching Your Face:
Your hands carry bacteria that can cause pimples. Try to keep them away from your face!

Not Cleansing Your Face:
Skipping your skincare routine can clog pores. Cleanse daily to remove dirt and oil.

Dirty Phones:
Your phone collects bacteria that can transfer to your skin. Wipe it down regularly.

Not Using Proper Products:
Use products suited for your skin type. The wrong ones can cause irritation and breakouts.

Dirty Pillowcases:
Change pillowcases frequently to avoid transferring oils and bacteria to your skin.

Sun Exposure:
Too much sun can worsen acne. Protect your skin with sunscreen.

Hormones and Stress:
These can trigger breakouts. Manage stress through relaxation techniques and consult a doctor for hormonal imbalances.

Many people mistakenly believe that acne is a result of dirty skin, but it is actually caused by a combination of factors. Genetics, hormones, lifestyle choices, and stress levels all play a role. The sebaceous glands, present in everyone, produce natural oil. When these glands overproduce oil, pores can become blocked, trapping bacteria in the skin. This can lead to blackheads, whiteheads, or deeper, painful cysts. By understanding the root causes of acne, individuals can take measures to maintain healthy skin and manage the condition effectively.

Acne is common among teenagers during puberty, with about 95% experiencing more spots due to hormonal changes. Some women continue to face acne into adulthood, particularly during pregnancy when hormones fluctuate. While we cannot control these hormonal changes, we can reduce the risk of breakouts by making healthier choices and avoiding known triggers.

Factors such as smoking, stress, and a diet high in simple sugars have been linked to a higher risk of acne. By adopting healthier lifestyle and dietary habits, we can help lower our chances of dealing with this troublesome condition.

Comedonal acne is characterised by clogged pores, leading to blackheads and whiteheads. Blackheads are open pores filled with excess oil and dead skin cells, which turn black due to oxidation. Whiteheads are closed pores with similar contents but without exposure to air.

Inflammatory acne involves red, swollen pimples caused by bacteria, excess oil, and dead skin cells leading to inflammation. This type can be more painful and may leave scars if not treated properly.

Nodulocystic acne is a severe form of acne featuring deep, painful nodules and cysts under the skin. This type often requires professional treatment due to its potential to cause significant scarring.

Hormonal acne is linked to fluctuations in hormones, particularly androgens, which increase oil production and lead to breakouts. It commonly appears along the jawline and chin, especially in adults.

Pityrosporum folliculitis, also known as fungal acne, is caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the skin. It results in itchy, uniform pimples, often mistaken for regular acne but requiring different treatments.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re younger or elder.
Anyone can experience problems with sexual issues and sexual health.

This can cause significant impact on the individual’s mental health as well as a strain on the relationship at times.

June is internationally recognised as Acne Awareness Month, providing an opportunity to highlight one of the most widespread skin conditions. The primary goal of this month is to stress the significance of education, support, and available treatments for those dealing with acne. This period aims to debunk myths, inform the public about its causes and treatments, and give advice on handling this frequently emotionally challenging issue.

When it comes to our skin, it is completely normal to feel self-conscious, however if you feel that your skin is dictating your mood and happiness, you might be dealing with an element of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). This condition is more common than you might think and can involve a preoccupation with acne scars or pore size (pore phobia) that seems much worse to you than it actually is. Some signs and symptoms of BDD include:

Preoccupation with Appearance: Individuals with BDD are intensely concerned with one or more aspects of their physical appearance, believing these areas look abnormal, deformed, or extremely disfigured, such as with acne scarring. They often spend at least an hour a day, and usually much more, obsessing over these disliked areas.

Insight Regarding BDD Beliefs: Most people with BDD are either mostly or completely convinced that they look abnormal or extremely scarred, despite others not perceiving them this way.

Repetitive Compulsive Behaviors: BDD preoccupations lead to repetitive compulsive behaviors aimed at fixing, hiding, inspecting, or seeking reassurance about the disliked body parts. These behaviors typically occur several times a day and are difficult to control or stop. They may include:

- Social anxiety and distancing (different from cases where severe scarring leads to social isolation due to significant psychological impact).
- Seeking multiple procedures from specialists (unlike situations where past treatments have been ineffective against severe acne scars).
- Being preoccupied with methods to cover scars, which is distinct from using camouflage to hide objectively severe acne scars.
