"This is not a badge of honour, not required or needed to make people feel better, so why do it?

This isn't Massage Therapy...

This is closer to "GBH" than to any kind of helpful or effective form of manual therapy.

I show these images to my students as an example of what not to do!

There is no plausible reason or consensus in the evidence to support marking and bruising people like this with scraping (IASTM / Gua Sha) or cupping techniques traditionally used for thousands of years in most massage therapies eastern or western. That is not a good enough reason to carry on doing this in the 21st Century. We move on with our understanding and so what we do needs to move on too.

Suffice to say we never teach our students to ever harm people like this.

We teach them to work with the clients body to help them with their issues, via techniques and therapies that actually do work for the reasons we think they do, making them a step ahead of the other therapists already in circulation, doing these types of treatments."

If you prefer a gentle approach to manual therapy, DNM is perfect for you. It treats the cutaneous nerves (below the skin) to help reduce pain.

Get in touch if you would like to see how this technique could help you.

I want to quash the rumour that sports massage is brutal.

For example, DNM (Dermoneuromodulation) is a very gentle hands on treatment that works on the cutaneous nerves just below the skin to reduce pain. It can be used as a stand alone treatment or in conjunction with other techniques or movement to maximise results. This and other superficial techniques can help to relax the muscles by calming the nervous system.

True, there are some techniques that can be more uncomfortable but when applied within a client’s comfort level, even these are tolerable.

Muscles do not need to be pummelled within an inch of their lives for the massage to be effective and over the years I’ve seen the slower and more gradual approach gives better results.

So, if the thought of a Sports Massage fills you with dread, fear not, let me show you I’m nothing like the rumour.

Some good (and counter-intuitive) news about intervertebral discs. It’s like spinal Christmas! Running may be good for your intervertebral discs, rather than being too hard on them. It makes them…

Excited to start offering Dermoneuromodulation from next week.

"DermoNeuroModulating, or -tion, is a structured, interactive approach to manual therapy that considers the nervous system of the patient from skin cell to sense of self. Techniques are slow, light, kind, intelligent, responsive and effective. Positioning of limbs and trunk affects deeper nerve trunks (by shortening and widening their container), and is combined with skin stretch directed toward cutaneous fields of nerves that branch outward into skin (which may draw neural structure further through its container).
It is prudent to remember that manual handling of a patient's physicality is only a small part of developing a complete therapeutic context for change - while optional, it can also be optimal." - Diane Jacobs
