🚨ARE YOU BEING DEFINED BY YOUR DIABETES DIAGNOSIS?🚨//

No one likes to be boxed into a single label, but too often, I see this happening with women who want to conceive while managing their diabetes.

You are more than your diabetes diagnosis!

Fertility is a complex puzzle that involves so much more than one piece.

It’s also important to remember that your diabetes preconception appointments will focus on your diabetes and associated health. So it’s good to manage your expectations with what care to expect.

As a specialist fertility & diabetes dietitian I focus on a full 360 evidence based approach. Together we’ll work on:

✨Managing your insulin and other hormones to support ovulation and optimise egg quality

✨Fine-tuning your nutrition and movement to enhance your fertility and support your body through the journey

✨ Creating a sustainable lifestyle strategy that promotes overall health AND improves your chances of conceiving (we focus on mindset and achieving lasting change)

I’m here to help you look beyond the “diabetes” label and uncover a fuller picture of your reproductive health. Fertility is rarely about one thing, it’s about putting all the pieces together.

This month is (a condition that is estimated to affect up to 40% of women with type 1 and up to 21% in women with type 2 and often left undiagnosed). I’m starting a case study group looking for 5 proactive women who want to lose weight, optimise their fertility and fall pregnant in 2025. If this is you and you are ready to get started in the next 30 days drop me a DM with the word OPTIMISE and let’s get started.

September is PCOS Awareness Month! 🎗️
Throughout this month, I’ll be sharing insights on how I support women living with PCOS and managing type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Let’s kick things off with some important stats to highlight the connection between PCOS and diabetes. 📊

While PCOS is often linked with type 2 diabetes due to insulin resistance, it’s important to note that PCOS symptoms can also appear in women with type 1 diabetes. This is something I frequently see in my clinic.

These figures really give us something to think about. 🤔

Do these stats surprise you?

Let’s continue to spread awareness and support each other this PCOS Awareness Month! 🌟

CAN YOU RELATE?//

A comment from clinic today.

Self-managing your diabetes involves lots of thoughts and feelings which inform your behaviours.

This was from a woman using hybrid closed loop who has achieved 88 % time in range.

It happened with gluten and now with blood glucose and it hasn’t stopped.

When I first heard the use of flash glucose monitors in people that weren’t living with diabetes, those four words came straight to mind. I also thought about the overwhelming burden self-managing a long-term condition like diabetes has on my clients, and the comparison of tech as a need to have versus a nice to have. What is a glucose “spike” in someone with diabetes and where is the evidence of the harm it does?

For decades I’ve taught clients and colleagues about the fluctuations in blood glucose levels and the reassurance of aiming for a range in blood glucose levels and not a number, that numbers never stay the same and variation is expected, whether you are living with diabetes (type 1, type 2 or GDM) or not, but we’re aiming for them to fall into a range.

There is indeed evidence of the effect of glycemic excursions in people living with diabetes being a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Time in range alongside HbA1c has given us a much greater picture of blood glucose management and how to support self-management.

As policy and marketing has opened the accessibility to what we know traditionally as diabetes tech, it’s important that we’re all aware where the evidence starts and ends.

Looking forward to sharing my experiences of working with diabetes tech since specialising in diabetes care in 2003 tonight with other dietitians and talking about the implementation and integration of tech in my practice and our healthcare system. Also looking forward to supporting clinicians to appropriately support people living with diabetes using tech.

CASE STUDY: Type 1 diabetes & fertility

I’m sharing working together with a type 1 client I first met when she was diagnosed at 16 years of age and working with her again 16 years later when she came to me for support with her fertility.

We worked together for 6 months. The first 3 months it was just the the two of us, and the remaining 3 months her partner joined us.

Through the 6 months we optimised her blood glucose levels, their egg and s***m health and discussed supporting her receptivity of her uterine lining.

We worked through blood results and discounted potential underlying factors that may also affect their fertility.

From feeling confused, overwhelmed and lost on their journey and in all the information. They left feeling confident in future plan, certain of their next steps and clearer on the credibility of the evidence they needed to follow.

Both felt more confident advocating for themselves and moving things forwards on their terms.
