Often, we ask each other how are you? This question opens it up for people to respond either positively or negatively. If they are not feeling great about something, these feelings can take over and they then share with you everything that is not going right in their lives. They head straight to what is called the hippocampus in the brain, the place where we store the thought patterns that relate to ‘everything that is going wrong,’ and these then become reused in their conversation with you, strengthening them further and then causing an increase in these feelings.
If we thought about asking them ‘What’s been good today?’ you are encouraging them to think about something positive, which encourages them to actively go to the left pre-frontal cortex part of the brain and then respond positively. This then creates a positive thought pattern, possibly a new one and can then link to more positive thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
Solution focused hypnotherapy can help individuals to strengthen positive thinking and thought patterns, encouraging a way to engage with your brain that gives you the focus you are looking for. From doing this I have supported clients in taking steps towards achieving their desired goals and becoming much happier in themselves.
