Hand washing is key to protecting school environments…
…which makes the teaching of it more important than ever!

It’s often been said that learning how and when to wash hands properly could be deemed “the most important lesson a child can ever learn”. And it seems that effective hand hygiene protocols at any school or educational establishment are likewise crucial when it comes to safeguarding those children and staff who are there on a daily basis.

The point is that “Protecting school environments from illness is no simple task”, according to a recent report on the Infection Control Today website.

Preschools and nurseries face health challenges as the autumn gradually gives way to winter. Kids and adults alike spend increasing amounts of time together indoors, making the spreads of those seasonal illnesses far more likely and frequent.

The importance of regular hand washing

In conjunction with the Department of Education, the CDC outline steps that educational establishments need to take to help “prevent the spread of infectious diseases among students and staff”, which include appropriate cleaning and disinfection of surfaces, a cough etiquette, and of course hand washing.

Soap and water, used well, for the appropriate amount of time and when needed, can make a huge difference when it comes to keeping illnesses at bay, says the report.

“Frequent handwashing: Encourage washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the restroom, after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose, after touching shared objects, and when handling and caring for classroom pets.”

"Washing hands regularly and using and disposing tissues in bins can reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses, as can ensuring that indoor areas are well ventilated."
