The Midland Maternity and Midwifery Festival celebrates maternity and midwifery work around the West Midlands and offers an opportunity to bring together leaders to discuss the latest news and projects.

Colleagues from our Women's Hospital were in attendance and presented at the festival, sharing successful initiatives such as embedding trauma awareness, upskilling our workforce and providing robust support for newly qualified midwives.

"Events like the Midlands Maternity and Midwifery Festival allow us to network, learn from others, and ensure our services remain at the forefront of maternity care and provide the best possible outcomes for families."

Maddison was diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), a serious condition that affects the diaphragm, at a 24-week scan at our Women's Hospital.

When she was born, she was intubated before being transferred to Birmingham Children's Hospital for a successful surgery at just 2 days old to patch her diaphragm. She then spent nine weeks in hospital before being discharged home.

Her mum said: "She’s doing absolutely amazing and I can't thank you all enough for saving my beautiful little girl, thank you."

Maddison still attends the hospital for check-ups, but we're so proud of how fantastic she is doing - thank you to her family for sharing her story 🌈

Mum Joanna recently welcomed her fifth child, Asher, after being seen in the specialist Rainbow Clinic at our Women's Hospital💜

Funded by our charity, the service was set up in 2024 to offer women and families a separate clinical space and continuity of care to help ease anxieties with pregnancy after loss.

“I felt so emotional to have been thought of for the clinic. It had been four years since we lost Edith and I’d had two healthy children since, so to know that me and Edith hadn’t been forgotten was really special."

Read Joanna's story and find out more about our Rainbow Clinic on page three of talk BWC: https://orlo.uk/UMPvE

Last year we opened the doors to Woodland House, our dedicated bereavement centre for families experiencing pregnancy and baby loss. We worked with our families, who bravely shared their experiences, to help us create a purpose-built, comfortable non-clinical safe-haven where our families can now spend time and grieve together and their loss feels honoured. A huge part of their feedback was the need for a private outdoor space, where families could take their babies, and spend time together in the fresh air and in nature. Thanks to charity funding, and the support of 19 brilliant corporate volunteers, we have been able to help transform our Woodland House garden to match the peaceful space we created inside.
Donations have supported the preparation of the ground, as well as the purchase of new plants and trees and turf, all laid by colleagues from Systems adi Group , HSBC , Morro Partnerships and B*H Ltd, who donned their gardening gloves and volunteered a total of over 190 man-hours to dig, w**d and plant.
It's made such a difference and we'd like to say a huge thank you to our volunteers and Estelle Greenwood at GM Building and Property Services for their hard work to make this happen for our bereaved families, as well as all our generous supporters who donate to support projects like this at our hospital.
