Congratulations to Ola who has recently been awarded the internationally recognised DAISY Award.

Ola, a Midwife who works in our Ward One team, was nominated by a family for her positivity and kindness during the birth of their child on our Delivery Suite.

They told us that when they needed support, reassurance and, importantly, some smiles, Ola shined and was by their side brilliantly.

We recently hosted a visit from the First Lady of the Republic of the Gambia.

Her Excellency Fatou Bah-Barrow, the wife of President Adama Barrow, alongside her representatives from the Gambian High Commission, were part of the delegation welcomed by the Trust's Chairman, Sir Bruce Keogh.

The First Lady’s Foundation, The Fatou Bah-Barrow Foundation (FaBB) is committed to strengthening Gambia’s health sector, leading to better access and care. It also works to advance greater empowerment, equality, opportunity and progress for women.

Freddie, a boy born with a rare form of eye cancer, received lifechanging treatment after the condition was detected early thanks to the Generation Study 💜

The new study screens babies for over 200 genetic conditions.

Four weeks after being born and having his genome sequenced as part of the study, Freddie was diagnosed with hereditary retinoblastoma, a condition where early detection is crucial for preserving vision. As a result of the early diagnosis, he has been able to access faster, life changing treatment and his doctors are hopeful of being able to save Freddie’s vision.

To mark World Patient Safety Day last month, BWC staff highlighted some of the innovative projects currently underway within the Trust.

The theme this year was 'safe care for every newborn and every child'.

Some of the projects highlighted this year included pioneering work aimed at parent education, pivotal newborn screening research and projects to make vital prescriptions accessible in different languages.

You can find out more about them in talk BWC: https://orlo.uk/5wXw5

Families at our hospital and at our Children's Hospital often experience huge upheaval when looking after a sick child or baby. They face reduced income, relationship strain, housing problems, transport issues and the need to adapt to new situations. Many parents tell us they’re simply unable to leave the hospital to find local advice agencies, because of the long wait times and need to keep returning which impacts on time with their child or baby.

To better support these families, your donations have helped to provide funding so Citizens Advice could be on site at both our Women’s and Children’s Hospitals, for two days a week each.

In the last year, we’ve been able to support over 1,000 people, helping patients and families to receive over £320,000 worth of previously unclaimed welfare benefits. We know health is much more than the care we provide, which is why we have supported this invaluable initiative. Watch our video to learn more about the service and how it's helped families like Khalda and Bashir, who needed support while their daughter, Jawaher, was in our care.

We mark the end of Baby Loss Awareness by joining the global Wave of Light. Please watch to hear from our Director of Midwifery, Louisa Davidson, before our minute's silence at 7pm.

** This post features content relating to pregnancy and baby loss **
This evening (15 October) at 7pm, we will join together for the Global Wave of Light, which marks the end of Baby Loss Awareness Week. For one hour, with a candle lit, we take the time to honour and remember the little lives lost too soon and send support to the families experiencing pregnancy and baby loss. Wherever you do this, you will be joining a wave of light that flows all around the world, in memory of all the babies who lit up our lives for such a short time.
In honour of the Wave of Light, we invite anyone to share their memories and messages on our Wave of Light dedication page. This is a special digital space where the memory of little lives, live on with us here at our hospital.
Please share your tribute message today: https://orlo.uk/VKcfO
