It's FND (0Functional Neurological Disorder) Awareness Day

This disorder is (From NHS Inform):
Functional neurological disorder (FND) describes a problem with how the brain receives and sends information to the rest of the body.

It’s often helpful to think of your brain as a computer. In someone who has FND, there’s no damage to the hardware, or structure, of the brain. It’s the software, or program running on the computer, that isn’t working properly.

The problems that cause FND are going on in a level of the brain that you cannot control. It includes symptoms like arm and leg weakness and seizures. Other symptoms like fatigue or pain are not directly caused by FND, but are often found alongside it.

People may experience:
Migraine
Seizures
Motor and balance issues
Gait problems
Paralysis
Swallowing issues
Speech problems
Coordination issues
Tics
Spasms
Dissociative problems
Vision problems

It isn't life limiting but due to poor support from the medical community people can end up wheelchair bound and riddled with other comorbidities.

I've just spent 2 hours on a call with Neils Detert via FND Dimensions in which they have explained more about what FND is, research and what is and what should be available to support sufferers to regain control of their lives.

It was a very positive talk and I am grateful for the effort they have all put in. I hope that it will help some people to gain more of the services they need and for service providers to give better medical support and awareness.
