A funeral top hat is more than tradition—it’s a mark of dignity, respect, and timeless professionalism. 🎩🖤 Rooted in Victorian mourning customs, it became a defining symbol for Funeral Directors, setting them apart with an air of solemn authority. Paired with a dark suit and gloves, the top hat wasn’t just for style—it embodied the respect owed to both the departed and their loved ones.

During the days of horse-drawn hearses, the top hat worked hand-in-hand with the cane, helping guide the procession and signal to the public to stand aside in reverence. While today many opt for more modern attire, at Dignity, we continue to honour this tradition—keeping its presence alive in our ceremonies.

Top hats are still available in a variety of materials, heights, and styles, offering a graceful tribute to heritage and ceremony.

🐾 Jade from A Hazel and Sons, Erdington hosted two wonderful sessions at St.Barnabas Church Centre Erdington, bringing the community together to knit Cat Comforters for Cats Protection! 🧶 Not only did they create cozy gifts for our feline friends, but many also learned a new skill along the way.

This project is still purring along — if you'd like to donate or drop off handmade comforters, please bring them to A Hazel and Sons, Erdington. Let’s keep the kindness going! 💛

☀️ Summer Open Day Returns to Birmingham Crematorium! A wonderful opportunity to explore the tranquil and historic grounds that we’re honoured to care for every day.

Many in our community haven’t had the chance to visit — and we’d love to share the beauty, history, and heartfelt work that goes into everything we do.

🕰️ Built in 1903, the crematorium holds a rich history that we’re proud to share. 🌿 On the day, you’ll enjoy:
> A guided tour of the grounds led by our Business Leader, Leon
> A behind-the-scenes look with Cremator Technician, Steve
> Creative and relaxing activities with Memorial Consultant, Jacqueline — from flower planting to stone painting for the gardens

☕ Hot food and refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Whether you come to learn, reflect, or simply experience the peaceful surroundings, we’d love to welcome you. It truly means the world to us to share what we’ve been working on 🌸❤️

The funeral cane—a timeless symbol of dignity and direction. 🖤 Traditionally carried by Funeral Directors, the cane has its roots in Victorian-era customs, where it served as both a practical tool and a marker of authority during funeral processions. Though its use has evolved, it still carries profound meaning, guiding each step of the journey with honour and respect.

Interestingly, its history parallels that of the army cane, known as the swagger stick or pace stick. Originally used for measuring battlefield paces, these sticks became symbolic of leadership and rank—especially for non-commissioned officers and officers.

From the military to the mortuary, these canes are more than accessories—they're emblems of tradition, precision, and reverence.

Meet the Team at Sutton Coldfield Funeral Home 💙

Meet Rhys! 🥁🍺 With an inspiring career path and 3 years at Dignity under his belt, Rhys brings energy, experience, and leadership to everything he does. He began his journey as a porter, rose to supervisor, then moved into the mortuary, assisting with post-mortems. After a detour as a prison officer, he returned to funeral care and worked his way up—from Funeral Service Operative (FSO) to Funeral Director, then Assistant Manager, General Manager, and now, a valued member of the Dignity team. 💪🕊️

Outside of work? 🎶 Rhys is a Level 6 LCM drummer with 15 years of passion behind the kit! 🥁 His rhythm doesn’t stop at work—he lives and breathes music.

Fun fact! 🍻 “Call me old, but I love a cheeky Guinness.” You’ve got to admire his taste!

We’re lucky to have Rhys’ drive, talent, and good humour on our team.
