The time of year doesn’t change how often you should have your eyes tested - most people are advised to book a routine eye test every two years. However, if you notice any changes to your vision or discomfort in bright light, it’s worth getting checked sooner.

Summer can highlight problems you might not notice in lower light - like glare sensitivity or dry eyes - especially if you’re spending more time outdoors or working in air-conditioned spaces. Regular tests help keep your vision in check and protect against longer-term issues.

With school summer holidays on our doorstep, we know children are likely to spend more time outdoors - whether at the park, in the garden or at the beach. While sunshine and fresh air are great for their overall wellbeing, it’s important to remember their eyes need care too.

Children’s eyes are more sensitive to UV rays than adults’, and prolonged exposure without protection can increase the risk of long-term damage. A wide-brimmed hat, time in the shade, and a good pair of UV-blocking sunglasses (ideally CE or British Standard marked) can go a long way.

Keeping an eye on screen time during down days is also worthwhile. Giving their eyes a regular break - especially during long car journeys or indoor gaming sessions - helps reduce strain.

Summer should be all about fun, but a little awareness can help ensure it’s healthy too.
