🌟 Struggling to find events your autistic child can actually enjoy? You’re not alone. 🌟

Most children’s events are loud, chaotic and overwhelming, especially if your child is autistic.
You want them to join in, to smile, to feel included… but most places simply are not designed with your child in mind.

That is exactly why we created our Autism Friendly Animal Show at The SENtre.

🧠 A safe, understanding environment
🦜 Gentle animal encounters including snakes, furry friends and giant snails
🤝 Supportive staff who truly understand

Whether your child wants to touch the animals or simply watch, they will feel welcome, calm and included.

There are many ways to help your child communicate with you. Exposing your child to all forms of communication is essential to reduce frustration and also find the method that suits them.

This is not a fast process and can sometimes take years to perfect. The results are invaluable to both families and the child.

PECs is a picture exchange system where your child can select pictures for ask for the items they want. At advance levels they can also have conversations.

Tips when teaching this:
1. Use items that have high motivation
2. Lots of patience, your child will need to learn the concept first
3. Try to use items they can keep asking for example blocks, lots of cars, pencils for drawing. Items like the IPad are great but only allow 1/2 chances to practice

DON’T TEACH SIGN IT STOPS SPEECH!

This is a common misconception. Sign actually helps speech and is massively beneficial to the children we work with for many reasons.

MAKATON is a form of sign (different to sign language) that aids speech and should always be paired with the verbal word by the teacher.

MAKATON can:

1. Reduce frustration as it is faster for a child to process a sign that words when a child is angry, overworked or sad. This makes it easier for them to understand later, wait, calm or anything else

2. MAKATON can aid speech because your child can sign what they want to you and you can then help them with the word.

3. It helps them access other environments as the signs are generally similar (may differ in different countries) helping confidence and increasing your child’s ability to settle in an environment

4. It can also reduce your frustration and anxiety! As you are able to know what your child wants

Activities with a nice clear end help childcare know what’s expected and also allows them to know when a task is going to end.

Sometimes frustration can occur when things become overwhelming and the ability to communicate this feeling can be too much.

Prevention for this could be token economy boards, now and next boards, visual timetables and presenting work in a way that’s bite sized.

Try it and let us know!

Terminology time!

An EHCP is a legal document which states your child’s needs. It will state what staffing your child needs, for example 1:1, what provisions they need for example mainstream, special school or resource bases and also what additional service they need such as speech and language and occupational.

It will be used by schools and practitioners to determine how to measure your child’s progress, move on targets and help your child regulate and access the educational provision.
