Its world emoji day!
In recent years July the 17th has been known as World Emoji Day, chosen because the calendar emoji is depicted with the date of the 17th as its image.
Emoji’s have actually been used since the beginning of the internet however their popularity has increased on a massive scale with the modern-day smartphone having them built into our messaging dashboards, well known emoji merchandise on sale around the world and even an emoji movie in honour of them.
I can remember back to the days of the acid raves when the happy emojis began to appear on T-shirts depicting the mood in many of those raves.
This may have been due to the use of particular drugs that were associated with that scene, such as ecstasy, which could cause alter the mood of users and create a sense of euphoria.
Further down the line, as noted above emojis began to be used especially around the instant messaging phenomenon and the rest as they say is history.
Whilst smartphones have brought significant concerns because of their addictive nature, one by product seems the be the popularity and prevalence of emoji’s use.
In fact, it is debatable whether they would have been used so much without the smartphone revolution.
This also coincides with the increasingly greater awareness we are developing as a society to mental health and also emotional wellbeing.
Emojis have become a language especially for children and young people both to recognise and express how they are feeling and it is hard to imagine a world now without them.
