Wrapping up Nutrition & Hydration Week 💧🍽️✨

As we close this important week, we’re reminded that recovery after critical illness doesn’t end at ICU discharge — nutrition and hydration remain essential every step of the way 🏥💙

🔹 Key messages for recovery:
• Nutrition supports healing and rehabilitation 🩹
• High protein & energy intake helps rebuild strength 💪⚡
• Small, frequent meals can improve intake 🍽️
• Oral nutritional supplements may support requirements 🥤
• Enteral feeding can be vital when oral intake is not yet safe 🧑‍⚕️

🔹 Recovery is not just physical:
• Mealtime support from family & friends matters 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦❤️

Through critical illess, the body faces significant challenges — and nutrition plays a key role in supporting recovery, strength, and overall wellbeing 🏥💙

🔹 Why nutrition matters post-critical illness:
• Supports healing and recovery 🩹
• Helps rebuild strength and energy 💪⚡
• Reduces risk of infection 🦠⬇️
• Aids wound healing 🧬
• May shorten hospital stay ⏳

⚠️ Many patients may experience barriers to eating and drinking, including:
• Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) 🗣️
• Reduced strength and fatigue 😴
• Nausea or gastrointestinal symptoms 🤢
• Changes in taste 👅
• Low mood or emotional challenges 💭

The CCSG Conference grant is back for 2026!

The CCSG are offering an education grant towards a relevant conference of your choosing. Up to £1000 is available to cover the conference cost as well as travel and accommodation. Applications for the conference grant are now open on our website until 2nd of February . We aim to feed back to applicants within one week of application closing date.

We kindly ask all applicants to plan their travel and accommodation in advance and have a provisional discussion with their workplace to ensure they can submit any expense claims promptly, should they be awarded the grant.

As the year comes to a close, we want to say a huge thank you to our members, colleagues and wider dietetics and critical care communities — whether you’re celebrating Christmas, marking another holiday, or simply enjoying a well-earned pause (or powering through a shift!) 🎄✨

To those working across critical care services over the coming weeks, we see you and appreciate everything you do. To those taking time away, we hope you’re able to rest and recharge in whatever way feels right for you. 👏💙🌟☕️🍵🧋

The CCSG will be out of office from now and will be back from 5 January 2026. 📅📴

A huge welcome to Hannah Jones, who joins us as our new Events Officer on the CCSG committee! ✨

Hannah is a Critical Care Dietitian at King’s College Hospital, London. One of her favourite parts of critical care dietetics is the strong MDT working — she thrives on collaboration and shared problem-solving across the team. 🙌

Outside of work, Hannah is a devoted fan of all Thai food (truly all of it! 🍜🔥) and relies heavily on her beloved air fryer, which has basically retired her oven.

She chose to volunteer with CCSG to help support and expand the impact of the profession, and we’re absolutely delighted to have her energy and enthusiasm on board.

Welcome to the team, Hannah! 👏
