πŸ’œ VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: FAITH - HEALTH CHAMPION AT ASTON PRIDE & MMUH πŸ’œ

This is Faith. She's a Bethel Volunteer Health Champion, and she's exactly where she's meant to be.

πŸ“ **WHERE IS SHE?**

Right now, Faith is completing her Health Champion placement at Aston Pride Health Centre, wearing her NHS uniform (provided by the trust!), supporting women in antenatal care.

She's one of the FIRST Health Champions recruited at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital - part of our pioneering volunteer pathway.

**FAITH'S JOURNEY:**

🌱 **Started with Bethel Doula Training**
Faith completed our Doula training programme first. That foundation gave her confidence, practical skills, and deep understanding of holistic, woman-centered care.

πŸ’œ **Became a Volunteer Health Champion**
After Doula training, Faith progressed to our Health Champion pathway - a structured 200-hour volunteer placement working directly within NHS services.

πŸ₯ **100 Hours at Aston Pride Health Centre**
Faith is currently being mentored at Aston Pride Health Centre, supporting women in antenatal care and raising awareness of vital health services in the community.

πŸ₯ **100 Hours at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital**
Next, she'll switch to MMUH to continue her placement, gaining experience in a brand-new hospital setting.

**WHAT FAITH DOES AS A HEALTH CHAMPION:**

πŸ“ˆ Create pathways back into professional healthcare roles

First aid training isn't optional for our doula volunteers - it's required.

Yesterday, 16 volunteers learned CPR, emergency response, and infant safety. They practised on mummies, asked tough questions, and took it seriously.

Because when you're supporting vulnerable pregnant women and new mothers, you need to be ready for anything. Bleeding. Choking. Collapse. These aren't scare tactics - they're realities.

Our volunteers don't just provide emotional support. They're trained. They're competent. They can respond in a crisis.

100% of this cohort will be first aid certified before they support their first family.

That's the standard. That's Bethel.

🌈 SHE'S HERE! CELEBRATING A RAINBOW BABY & SPECIALIST DOULA SUPPORT 🌈

Look at that beautiful "She's Here!" sign. Look at those tiny pink baby clothes. Look at the miracle this represents.

This baby girl was born today. But her story started long before this moment.

**HER MUM'S JOURNEY:**

This mum experienced multiple miscarriages before this pregnancy. Each loss was devastating. Each positive pregnancy test brought hope mixed with terror.

When she became pregnant again, she was referred to Bethel's PALMS pathway - Pregnancy And Loss Management Support.

**WHAT IS PALMS?**

PALMS is a specialist doula support for families who've experienced:
- Pregnancy loss (miscarriage, stillbirth, TFMR)
- Previous traumatic births
- Rainbow pregnancies (pregnancy after loss)
- High anxiety following loss
- Complex grief and pregnancy

These families need MORE than standard doula support. They need doulas who understand trauma. Who won't dismiss their fears. Who can hold both grief and hope at the same time.

**THIS IS THE DOULA HEALTH CHAMPION PATHWAY:**

Our Doula volunteers aren't just supporting straightforward pregnancies. They're trained to support families through:

πŸ’œ **Pregnancy After Loss**
Supporting anxious rainbow pregnancies where every scan brings terror, not just joy.

πŸ’” **Bereavement Support**
Being present when pregnancies end in loss, providing compassionate care.

🌈 **Complex Emotional Journeys**
Holding space for mums who are simultaneously grieving past babies and celebrating current ones.

🀱 **High-Risk Pregnancies**
Supporting families facing medical complications, bed rest, or NICU journeys.

πŸ’ͺ **Trauma-Informed Care**
Understanding that previous loss affects EVERYTHING about how a mum experiences pregnancy and birth.

**WHY THIS MATTERS:**

Standard maternity care often treats each pregnancy as separate. But for mums who've experienced loss, every pregnancy carries the weight of what came before.

This mum didn't just need someone at her birth. She needed someone who:
βœ… Understood her fear every time bleeding started
βœ… Celebrated each milestone while honouring her previous losses
βœ… Didn't tell her "don't worry, it'll be fine this time"
βœ… Held space for complex emotions
βœ… Supported her through anxiety, trauma, and finally - joy

That's specialised doula support. That's what our Health Champions train for.

**TODAY'S CELEBRATION:**

Today, this mum gave birth to her baby girl. After everything she's been through, she got to hold her rainbow baby.

And we were honoured to be part of that journey - from PALMS referral to "She's Here!" πŸ’•

**TO THE MUM:**

You are INCREDIBLE. You survived loss. You carried hope through fear. You trusted us to support you. And look what you did - you brought this beautiful girl into the world.

We're so proud of you. Congratulations. 🌸

**WANT TO BECOME A DOULA HEALTH CHAMPION?**

Our Doula volunteers make THIS kind of impact. They don't just attend births - they walk alongside families through the hardest journeys.

**Training includes:**
- Pregnancy and birth support
- Trauma-informed care
- Loss and bereavement support
- Mental health awareness
- NHS system navigation
- Cultural competency
- Specialist pathways (like PALMS)

πŸ“§ **Email:** enquiries@bethelnetwork.org.uk
πŸ“ž **Call:** 0121 824 0746

Applications open now. Training starts soon.

This could be you. Supporting families. Changing lives. Being part of rainbow baby stories. πŸ’›

πŸ’œ MEET CLAIRE: DOULA VOLUNTEER MAKING LIFE-CHANGING IMPACT πŸ’œ

This photo was taken last week in a Birmingham delivery room. That's Claire - one of our Doula volunteers - supporting a mum through labour and birth.

Claire was trusted to support this mum independently. And look at what happened: a beautiful baby girl, a grateful mum, and a volunteer who just changed someone's life forever.

**THE MUM SENT US THIS MESSAGE:**

"I would be very grateful if you could pass on my sincere thanks to Claire. Her kindness, encouragement, and calm presence made a real difference during such an important time. Her support will always be remembered and deeply appreciated πŸ™πŸΎβ€οΈ and thank you and Bethel doula so much for your support."

Read that again. "Will always be remembered."

That's the impact our Doula volunteers make.

**THIS IS THE DOULA HEALTH CHAMPION PATHWAY:**

🀱 **Who is Claire?**
A trained Bethel Doula volunteer. Not paid staff. A community member who completed our Doula training programme and is committed to supporting vulnerable Birmingham families.

πŸ’™ **What does she do?**
- Provides emotional and practical support during pregnancy
- Attends births as a trusted birth partner
- Offers postnatal support for new mothers
- Advocates for families navigating the NHS system

✨ **Why does this matter?**
Many of our mums face:
- Pregnancy alone (no partner, no family support)
- Language barriers in hospitals
- Fear of medical settings
- Previous trauma or difficult birth experiences
- Poverty and housing instability

Having Claire there, calm, kind, encouraging, changed this mum's entire birth experience.

**"THROWN IN AT THE DEEP END"**

Yes, Claire stepped up while I was away. But here's the thing: she wasn't *actually* thrown in unprepared.

She was:
βœ… Fully trained through our Doula programme
βœ… Supervised and supported by senior doulas
βœ… Trusted because she'd proven herself ready
βœ… Equipped with skills, knowledge, and compassion

That's what proper volunteer training looks like. That's the Doula Health Champion model.

**WANT TO BECOME A DOULA VOLUNTEER LIKE CLAIRE?**

We're recruiting for our next Doula training cohort!

**What you'll get:**
- Full Doula training and certification
- Ongoing supervision and mentorship
- Experience supporting real families
- Pathway to NHS, midwifery, or doula careers
- The chance to change lives (like Claire just did)

**What we need from you:**
- Compassion and commitment
- 10-15 hours per month (flexible)
- Willingness to learn and be supervised
- DBS check (we arrange this)
- Desire to support vulnerable families

To Claire: You were absolutely incredible. Thank you for showing up, being present, and making this mum feel supported when she needed it most. We're so proud of you. πŸ’œ

To the mum: Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl! Thank you for trusting us to support you. We're honoured to have been part of your journey. 🌸

This is why we do what we do. This is Bethel. This is community. πŸ’›

🐣 INCREDIBLE EASTER DONATION FROM A LOCAL BIRMINGHAM GYM! 🐣

Look at this mountain of Easter eggs! A local gym partnered with Bethel to donate all this chocolate for vulnerable families - and we're so grateful!

🐰 **THE IMPACT:**

This Easter, thanks to this generous gym, families supported by Bethel's Baby Bank received Easter eggs for their children.

For mums facing:
- Poverty and financial hardship
- Housing instability or homelessness
- Domestic abuse situations
- Asylum/refugee status challenges
- Single parenthood with no support
..providing Easter treats can feel impossible.

But this donation meant mums could give their kids Easter magic - just like any other family. πŸ’œ

**ONE MUM TOLD US:**
"I can't afford Easter eggs this year. My kids are going to be so disappointed."

Thanks to this gym donation, her kids weren't disappointed. They got Easter excitement, chocolate, and joy. That's what community support looks like.

🎯 **TO THE GYM WHO DONATED:**

If you're seeing this post - THANK YOU! Please comment or message us so we can properly credit your incredible generosity! We want to shout about your kindness! 🐣

Your donation changed Easter for vulnerable Birmingham families. Thank you for caring.

πŸ’š LAST MONTHS RAPHA GROUP WELLBEING SESSION: BUILDING CONFIDENCE & MOVING FORWARD πŸ’š

8 people. 3 hours. One safe space to talk, share, and support each other.

πŸ“… Thursday, 27 February 2026
πŸ“ Bloomsbury Health Centre, Nechells, Birmingham
🎯 Focus: Building Confidence & Moving Forward

WHO SHOWED UP:

βœ… 8 brave individuals ready to work on their mental health
βœ… 6 women and 2 men (breaking down barriers!)
βœ… People from across Birmingham, including West Birmingham
βœ… A diverse group united by one thing: wanting to move forward

WHY THIS MATTERS:

Mental health struggles can feel incredibly isolating. You think you're the only one feeling stuck, anxious, or lacking confidence. But then you walk into a room and realise: *I'm not alone.

That's the power of group wellbeing sessions.

πŸ’¬ WHAT HAPPENS IN THESE SESSIONS:

✨ Facilitated discussions in a safe, non-judgmental space
✨ Practical skills and strategies for managing mental health
✨ Peer support - hearing from others who "get it"
✨ Creative activities and reflection
✨ Light refreshments (because good food helps!)
✨ Confidentiality and respect

WE ESPECIALLY CELEBRATE OUR MALE ATTENDEES:

Men face enormous pressure to "be strong" and "not talk about feelings." The fact that 2 men chose to show up yesterday and share their experiences? That's courage. That's breaking stigma. That's what we need more of.

Mental health support isn't "just for women." Everyone deserves a safe space to talk.

πŸ’œ RAPHA LISTENING SERVICE:

Our Group Wellbeing Sessions complement our 1:1 Rapha Listening support. Whether you prefer one-on-one listening or group sessions - we've got you.

**Topics we cover:**
- Building confidence & self-esteem
- Managing anxiety and low mood
- Moving forward after setbacks
- Healthy relationships
- Stress management
- And more!
