Winter's on its way!

Wear reflective clothing for early or late runs.
Eat regularly with warm wholesome foods.
Train off road to replicate cross country races.
Build mileage progressively.
Rest regularly if possible.
Plan days and weeks and monitor fitness levels.

Rest and recovery an important factor in one's development. Try an easy week every 6 to 8 weeks of progressive training. Reduce volume or do some cross training occassionally to taget different muscle groups and rest overused one's.
